VISITING FOR TOURISM, RECREATION OR TO VISIT FAMILY / Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (Subclass 601)
If you hold a passport from one of the countries in List A on the next page, and are seeking a stay of three months or less, you may apply for an ETA online at (service fee AUD$20). If you are from a country in List B your agent or airline may apply for an ETA on your behalf.
Note that the Tourist ETA is a standard product with multiple entry within 12 months, 3 month maximum stay on each arrival, and is tied to your passport, i.e. if you change passports you will need to apply for a new ETA. If you are seeking a longer stay than 3 months, see Subclass 600 below. All nationalities seeking to undertake short-term work related activity of any kind, or to participate in an event or events on a non-ongoing basis at the invitation of an Australian organisation, may apply for a Temporary Work (Short Stay) Visa.
Note that there must be a demonstrated need for you to undertake the activity in Australia, and it must be a highly skilled, non-ongoing activity.
This visa allows single or multiple entry for up to six weeks* (three months in exceptional circumstances) and cannot be extended in Australia. Conditions
These visas do not allow business activity or work of any kind, formal study or professional sports or entertainment. / Conditions
These visas do not allow work of any kind, but do allow business visitor activity, such as:
  • making general business or employment enquiries
  • investigating, negotiating, signing or reviewing a business contract
  • activities carried out as part of an official government-to-government visit
  • participating in conferences, trade fairs or seminars, as long as you are not being paid by the organisers to attend.

These visas allow highly-skilled non-ongoing work only, usually for no longer than six weeks*, but up to three months in exceptional circumstances.
The visa cannot be extended in Australia.
