Networking of research workers, developers, service providers, operators in the field of railway transport took place mainly within the Activity 2.5:12th International Symposium ZEL 2005 - “Railways on the edge of the 3rd millennium”

The 12th International symposium Zel 2005 - Railways on the edge of the 3rd millennium was held between 24th – 25th May 2005 at the University of Žilina.

The conference was organized under the auspices of rector of the University of Žilina, director of FAV Berlin, Transport minister, director general of ŽSR and ŽS a.s.

On the conference were presented 77 presentations - 19 by Slovak and 58 by foreign experts from operators, suppliers and the scientific community, mainly from the CEEC's but also from other European countries (e.g. Austria, Germany, France, Italy) and Asia (e.g. China, Korea). Together there were 212 participants, from which 70 were from Slovak republic and 142 were from abroad.

Main topics of the presentations were:

  1. Tasks for EU countries in railway harmonization
  2. Ways towards the „European Railway“ (international corridors, harmonization and interoperability, EN standards etc.)
  3. Putting together the European Railway Research competences in the new European Network of Excellence “EURNEX”
  4. Future of Railways: attractiveness, effectiveness, dependability etc.
  5. Leading role of the research, development and universities
  6. New technologies – a task for industry
  7. Up-to-date projects in the frame of the 6 Framework Program and of railway transportation, preparation of 7FP
  8. Computer based tools for planning and operation applications (e.g. simulation of railway operation)
  9. Radio-Controlled systems - signal boxes , automated train location via GPS, advanced train integrity control systems, failure management, GIS.

The topical problems were discussed further during the panel discussions and unofficial meetings.

The complete program of the symposium is given bellow:
