SWBAT compose poetry by writing rough drafts of their Where I’m From poem.

Homework: Work on your poems.

Agenda:

A.  Jumpstart- Where are you from?

Answer the questions:

·  Describe your front yard, back yard, or neighborhood.

Green lawn, evergreen bushes, fenced yard, shed in the backyard, dirt roads, shot-gun houses, front porches, people standing around talking, old man on corner playing his guitar, train on track with sugarcane stalks

·  Describe games you used to play in your yard or on your block.

School, house, hide-and-seek, made mud cakes, made up dances, cheer, skating on cobblestones, riding bikes, “Mother, may I,” jacks, riding bikes, chase, tic-tac-toe, Red light / green light, hop scotch, scary stories

·  Describe products your mom uses to clean the house.

Spic ‘n Span, Tide, Clorox bleach, Pledge furniture wax, Pinesol

·  What is a family tradition or belief?

Church on Sunday, prayers at night, respect adults, education is a must, good manners (thank you, good morning, may I, please), holiday meals with family, don’t talk back,

picnics, family eat meals together, attend Mardi gras

·  What is a family trait? (blue eyes, curly hair, close-set eyes, etc.)

fair skin, long hair, glasses, large eyes, out going, right handed, short / medium height, strong willed, freckles, talkative

·  What is something you’ve been told or taught by your parents or grandparents?

Don’t waste money, work hard, believe in yourself, respect yourself, God never fails, be kind, don’t forget your roots, you have rights; don’t let people make you feel less than you are, everybody isn’t your friend

·  What are your favorite foods?

Gumbo, red beans and rice, fried chicken, barbeque, Mexican food, Sushi, southern meals, hot water cornbread, greens, potato salad, shrimp, oysters

·  What item has been in the family a long time?

Mother’s furniture: table, sofa, pictures, Grandma’s jewelry, Grandma’s poetry, paintings, car / 1971, Grandma’s portrait when she was 16 years old
