OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB:
To assist the Senior Crematorium Technician in providing a high quality service for the Crematorium Chapels, Crematory and the disposal or collection of cremated remains to meet the needs of the bereaved.

SUMMARY OF MAIN DUTIES
1. / Provide a high standard of service to the Crematorium Chapels and Crematory and ensure that the needs and special requests of the bereaved are met.2. / Maintain good relations with the funeral directors, medical referees, clergy, organists etc .
3. / Assist the Senior Technician in ensuring compliance with the Code of Cremation Practice, the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Health and Safety at Work Act and Regulations and the Crematorium’s operations manual and method statements for the operation of the three cremators and ancillary equipment.
4. / Comply with procedures for the safe custody and correct identification of all cremated remains left in the care of the Crematorium prior to collection or dispersal in the Gardens of Remembrance in accordance with instructions, whether or not in the presence of mourners.
5. / Provide a high standard of maintenance for the Chapels. flower terrace, cloisters and car parking areas, the latter in liaison with the Head Gardener.
6. / Display a sensitive and customer focused approach to mourners and the general public at all times.
7. / Ensure the confidentiality of client information.
DETAILS OF MAIN DUTIES
Chapel Attendance Work a rotating shift pattern to include one Saturday in four
Liaise with other technicians to cover holiday and sickness
Liaising with religious and non religious officiants and organists
Liasing with the funeral directors and families
Understanding the needs of all faiths in preparing chapels
Loading of the digital music system and other equipment, if appropriate
Conducting mourners into/out of the chapels
Conducting mourners into crematory for witness charges
Supervision of coffin placement on the catafalques
Removal of coffin after committal and the removal of floral tributes from the coffin
Placement of floral tributes
Preparation of chapels for the following service
Carrying out a service when scatteringcremated remains in the presence of families and friends of the deceased.
Conducting tours of the facilities to members of the public, ministers and staff from hospices and care homes
Cremator OperationWork a rotating shift pattern to include one Saturday in four
Liaise with other technicians to cover holiday and sickness
Removal of coffin from the catafalques to cremator
Liaising with families who are witnessing the charge of the coffin into the cremator
Processing of cremated remainsfor final disposal
Maintenance of cremators and filtration equipment
Carry out daily checks to the filtration equipment
Maintaining appropriate documentation: operational log, cremation authorities, identity for the registration of cremated remains.
Basic computer skills
Scattering cremated remains in accordance with instructions.
General maintenance work and cleaning duties
Work in Gardens when and if crematory workload permits
This job is as currently perceived but management reserve the right to alter it in consultation with the post-holder in order to update it and take account of any changes identified. It is anticipated that annual appraisal will lead to updating of the job description.

ACADEMIC/PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL OR OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Post holder must possess or be willing to obtain the CTTS (cremating qualification)
Training will be given

At least one year’s relevant experience in a similar post

OTHER FACTORS
MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The conditions of Service are as laid down by the National Joint Council for Local Government Services.
(a) / Salary Grade: Within range £17,959 to £19,924 per annum which includes all contractual overtime payments and the London (Inner Fringe) Weighting Allowance of £798. Starting salary will be at the first point of the salary scale. Increments within the scale will be paid, subject to satisfactory service, on 1st April each year (subject to having been in post for 6 months) until the post-holder reaches the maximum incremental point on the scale. The salary scales themselves are normally reviewed at National level on 1st April each year.(b) / Annual Holiday: 20 working days (25 after 5 years Local Government service) plus 8 statutory holidays and 2 extra-statutory holidays.
(c) / Hours of Work: The normal working week for the posts is 37 hours on a shift rota basis. The post also requires that the post holder work 13 Saturday mornings’ 9.00am until 1.00pm and contractual overtime is paid for this. You will also work the Annual Service of Remembrance, which is held the second Sunday of July. You will also receive a half hour lunch break daily. All the additional payments are encompassing in the annual salary.
(d) / Probationary Service: The appointment of every new entrant to Local Government Service is subject to a period of probationary service of 6 months. At the end of the probationary period, the appointment is confirmed as permanent subject to a satisfactory report.
(e) / Pension Scheme: All employees of the Crematorium have automatic membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme. Hertfordshire County Council administers the Scheme on the Crematorium’s behalf. Employee contributions are 6% of salary, which will be deducted automatically. If you do not wish to participate in the Scheme you must state this in writing to the Crematorium Manager & Registrar.
(f) / Medical Report: Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory medical report from the Crematorium’s Medical Adviser. If a medical report is requested from a doctor who has at any time attended you, we will seek your consent to the request under the Access to Medical Reports Act 1988.
