OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON:

  • To discuss which climate zone Lithuania is situated in;
  • To analyse whether Lithuanian weather conditions can be attractive /unattractive to the world's population;
  • To overview what weather conditions there are in Lithuania in different seasons;
  • To deny or to confirm the stereotype that it is very cold in Lithuania

LESSON STAGES

1 step. Introduction(3 minutės)

  • Teacher asks:

-What does the word „climate“?

-When do you say that it is cold, and which temperature means that it is hot for you? (short conversation takes place, teachers write down the answers on the blackboard)

-What kind of weather prevents you from going outside?

-Explaining the meaning of the word “climate”:(climate [Greek “klima” (the origin of the word climate)inclination(ancient Greek thought that the variety of climate depends on the angle of solar rays into the surface of Earth)], the composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years.

2 step. Announcing the subject of the lesson.(3 minutės)

Teacher asks:

* What subject of the lesson we can formulate from previous questions?

* What objectives of the lesson can be raised?

The answers of the students are summarised and the subject of the lesson and its objectives are announced.

3 step.The geographical zone where Lithuania is situated is presented and also pecularities of Lithuanian climate. (4 minutės)

4 step.How Lithuanian climate is seen by your peers? (Power Point Presentation - 5 min.)

  • What are the facts and reasons, that make Lithuania interesting in its climate? (a brief discussion).

5 step. The coldest and hottest countries of the world are discussed. (3 min)

  • Teacher asks:

-Do you know in what country is there the highest temperature

(students discuss this question and give their answers, teacher writes the answers on the lackboard)

-Which country of the world has the coldest weather ?

(Discussion among students takes places, students’ answers are written down on the blackboard).

  • Teacher summarises students’’ answers:
  • In Lithuania

-The highest temperature +37,5°C, Zarasai, 1994m. July 30.

-The lowest temperature –42,9°C, Utena, 1956m. February 1.

6 step. Lithuania is interested not only by its geographical location, climate zone, but also by its four distinct seasons. (3 min.).

-Teacher explains that countries which are situated in this climate zone have a possibility to experience not only the coldest and hottest days of the year, but also to feel what it means to have four distinct seasons of the year, because some countries of the world have only summer and winter.

7 step. Students are divided into droups for creating presentation about weather conditions of Lithuania, which can be attractive ir unattractive for people of the world. (3 min)

  • Teacher divides students into four groups according to the season in which they were born.
  • Students are given a task: with the help of given information to create a poster with the most interesting information about Lithuania, its climate and things which, according students’ opinion, people should know before coming to Lithuania.

8 step. Students participate in creative process. Teacher monitors their work. (10 min.).

9 step. Students present posters created by their groups. Each group is given twoDminutes for the presentation. (8 min).

10 step. Reflexion, summarising of the lesson.(3 min)

-Teacher thanks everybody for their work during the lesson.

-Teacher asks students whether we can state that Lithuania has cold climate and can it be attractive for people from other countries because of its climate?

-Conclusions are made together: Lithuania is not a country with cold climate. But statement that its climate is cold depends on what kind of weather is thought to be cold.
