GRADE:Grade 2 Points 3 - 6

REPORTS TO:Head Teacher / School Business Manager

1. PURPOSE OF JOB

Receive school meals from external supplier, organise and serve hot dinners in line with pupil dietary needs. Appropriate record keeping in line with Environmental Health regulations and maintaining school kitchen to high standard of hygiene.

2. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS & DUTIES

  • Organise meals service by setting out equipment, plates, cutlery etc.
  • Receiving meals from external supplier, checking food is correct temperature, recording temperatures.
  • Organising food to pupil needs, including allergies, liquidising etc.
  • Serving up food in correct sized portions and supervising children as required.
  • Clearing away containers, crockery, cutlery etc. to be returned to food supplier whilst washing up equipment which is not returned.
  • Daily cleaning of kitchen. Deep cleaning at appropriate intervals.
  • Ensuring food hygiene regulations and good practice is complied with at all times with record keeping in accordance with environmental health regulations.

Work is carried out within procedures presenting limited opportunity for creativity only within clearly defined roles.

5. CONTACTS AND RELATIONSHIPS

The post holder will have contact with line manager, other employees of the school and pupils; there may be occasional contact with visitors to the school and suppliers.

6. DECISIONS

a)Discretion - Working within clearly defined procedures, generally discretion is made within a range of set alternatives.

b)Consequences - Child centred and Impacts on activities during lunchtime period.

7. RESOURCES

Resources such as crockery, cutlery, general kitchen equipment, responsible for taking care of the general facilities within the kitchen.

8. WORK ENVIRONMENT

a) Work Demands

Food has to be organised and served on time.

b) Physical Demands

Bending, lifting and carrying of heavy hot food containers. Also pushing and pulling and lifting of heavy equipment. Preparation of dining area may include moving and handling of tables, chairs etc.

c) Working Conditions

Working on school premises within school kitchen area and school hall in well-lit and ventilated environment.

d)Work Context

May be at risk from use of equipment e.g. cleaning chemicals and machinery.

The post holder may have limited exposure to abuse\aggression from pupils, parents and carers.

9. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene or be willing to undertake the food hygiene qualification to ensure hygiene standards are met and maintained at all times.
