FIX TO JAVA 7 SECURITY ISSUES and NETLAB

Many of you have had error messages pop up after the Java 7.51 update was applied to your PC. The following fixed the problems for me:

1.  If you enter an incorrect password when logging in, click in the black area or on the little red icon – both will bring up the “Allow Now” or “Allow and Remember” box you see below. If you select the “Allow and Remember” button, you will not see this error again.

2.  If you see a warning that an application has been blocked by security settings, follow these steps to fix that issue.

CAUSE OF ERROR:

“Java 7u10 introduces the ability to manage when and how untrusted Java applications (i.e. an application that is digitally signed by an unknown publisher, or a certificate that has not been issued by a trusted Certificate Authority) will run if they are included on a web page. Setting the security level within the Java Control Panel will determine whether

1.  You are prompted before an untrusted java application is run (MEDIUM or HIGH) or

2.  Untrusted Java applications will be blocked so they cannot run (VERY HIGH).

Starting with Java 7 Update 51, users will be able to configure the applications to run, that would normally be blocked by security checks. If the exception list feature is used, the option will be listed within the Java Control Panel.” ("How do i," )

STEP TO STOP BLOCK:

1.  Open Control Panel and locate the Java Control Panel icon.

2.  Open the Java Control Panel and select the Security tab. Click the “Edit Site List…” button.

3.  Click the “Add” button.

4.  Type http://myvlab1.collin.edu in the location box and select the “Add” button again. You will then see the Security Warning about including HTTP locations being a security risk. Since we know the vlabs are safe, select Continue.

5.  Select Add. Type http://myvlab2.collin.edu in the next location box, and select OK. You will see the security warning again; select Continue.

6.  It is recommended that you leave your Security Level at High. Note the Exception Site List shows both of the NetLab URLs. Select OK to complete the changes.
