Dr. Richard A. Rawson Biography

Richard A. Rawson, Ph.D., is an Associate Director of UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs and Professor-in-Residence at the UCLA Department of Psychiatry, where he has been a member for more than 25 years. Dr. Rawson oversees clinical trials on pharmacological and psychosocial addiction treatments and conducts work in the area of substance use disorder service development and evaluation. He is currently the principal investigator for SAMHSA-sponsored projects to develop the Vietnam HIV Addiction Technology Transfer center at Hanoi Medical University and the Iraqi Demand Reduction Program. He has contributed to the UNODC addiction workforce capacity building effort, Treatnet, and has worked with the World Health Organization, and the U.S. State Department, exporting science-based addiction service knowledge to many parts of the world. Dr. Rawson has published 6 books and over 230 book chapters and peer-reviewed articles and has conducted over 1,000 workshops, paper presentations, and training sessions.

Highlights of his career:

·  Dr. Rawson has worked with NIDA, SAMHSA, the US State Department, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime on international substance abuse research and training projects, exporting US technology and addiction science throughout the world. This has included work in Abu Dhabi, China, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Mexico, Oman, the Palestinian Territories, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Serbia, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as working with individuals from a multitude of additional countries.

·  He also directed the capacity building and training component of the United Nations International Network of Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Resource Centers.

·  Dr. Rawson developed the Matrix Model, which has been widely recognized and adopted as an effective, evidence based model of outpatient treatment.

·  Dr. Rawson is one of the world’s foremost experts on the effects of methamphetamine addiction and treatment.

·  Dr. Rawson has published 6 books, over 230 book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, and has conducted over 1,000 workshops, paper presentations, and training sessions.
