Learning outcomes /
  • To provide a historical overview of modern British literature
  • To examine the broad political, social and cultural contexts in which the modern British novel appeared
  • To acquire a set of theoretical approaches and key terms for analyzing literature
  • The ability to use the web as a source of research and information

  • The ability to present ideas clearly in speaking and writing

Enrolment prerequisites / Students should be enrolled in the 5th semester.
Course subject / The course provides an overview of modern British literature (V.Woolf: Mrs Dalloway, The Waves; J.Conrad: Heart of Darkness; J. Joyce: Ulysses, Finnegan's Wake; A. Huxley: Brave New World; G. Greene: The Ministry of Fear ). During the course, the students will become acquainted with modernist narrative techniques (e.g. stream of consciousness). Selected works of literature will be analyzed with respect to their cultural and historical context (critique of imperialism, the development of new technologies, the influence of psychoanalysis on literature etc.)

Assignments of the final grade / The grades will be based on class participation (30%), two exams (miterm, end-of-term, 30% each), and final oral examination (10%).
