WHEREAS, The specialty of emergency medicine lost a tireless leader, staunch advocate, compassionate physician, gifted educator, dear friend, mentor, and colleague in Michael G. Guttenberg, DO, FACEP, FACOEP, FAEMS, who passed away October 17, 2017, at the age of 50; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Guttenberg graduated with a doctorate in osteopathic medicine from New York Institute of Technology – New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1998, trained at New York Methodist Hospital where he served as chief resident in 2001 and completed his fellowship in Emergency Medical Services with the Fire Department of the City of New York in 2002; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Guttenberg held many leadership positions, including: Medical Director of the emergency departments at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers, NY and Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY, and Chairman of the LIJ- Forest Hills Hospital emergency department in Forest Hills, NY. He was also a leader in EMS as the medical director of many paramedic and ambulance services across Rockland, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens Counties and Commack, NY, and his latest and most prized position was Medical Director of the Center for Emergency Medical Services of Northwell Health; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Guttenberg was a first responder at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, as an EMS fellow, and he survived the collapse of both buildings only to return to help tend to the victims of the largest terrorist attack in United States history and earned special recognition from the mayor of New York City for his service and heroism; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Guttenberg served as teacher and mentor to many physicians, residents, nurses, paramedics and EMTs, advancing and supporting individuals as they embarked on their careers; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Guttenberg was a tireless patient advocate and throughout his illness he openly discussed his experiences navigating the health care system and his insights have helped us gain a better understanding of the patients’ perspective; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Guttenberg served the New York ACEP Chapter as a member of the Board of Directors from 2005 to 2011, EMS Committee Chair from 2004 to 2011, and as Councillor from 2003 to 2017; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Guttenberg was honored with many awards including; the Westchester Regional EMS Council Physician of Excellence Award, The George Koenig DO – National Collegiate EMS Foundation Service Award, the Suffolk County Regional EMS Council Physician of Excellence Award, the New York ACEP Advancing Emergency Care Award, and was the first recipient of the Michael G. Guttenberg Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Northwell Health Emergency Medicine Service Line; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Guttenberg’s leadership, energy, integrity, heart, and dedication helped shape emergency medicine and EMS in New York State; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the American College of Emergency Physicians remembers with gratitude the many contributions made by Michael G. Guttenberg, DO, FACEP, FACOEP, FAEMS, as one of the leaders in emergency medicine and the greater medical community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the American College of Emergency Physicians extends to the family of Michael G. Guttenberg, DO, FACEP, FACOEP, FAEMS, his friends, and his colleagues our condolences and gratitude for his tremendous service to the specialty of emergency medicine and to the patients and physicians of New York State and the United States.
