Senior Scholarship Opportunities

1.  Better Business Bureau of North Alabama: Local scholarship worth $1,000. Judges will select the scholarship recipients based on their overall person, integrity, and character, their personal achievements, contributions to their communities and schools, and academic accomplishments. Applicants must write an essay of 400 words or less on an assigned topic. Essays due September 28th. See Mrs. Montgomery for an application.

2.  Wendy’s Heisman: For the past sixteen years, Wendy's Restaurants have teamed up with the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee to create the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. The award honors both male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics and student leadership. We want applications from both male and female student athletes who exhibit excellence in the classroom, on the playing field, and within their communities. Eligibility for application is limited exclusively to men and women whose senior year of high school is the 2010–2011 academic years, who has at least a “B” grade average, and participate in at least one of 27 sports. 3.  The University of Alabama Scholarships: Visit www.scholarships.ua.edu for more information on the following three:

§  Capstone Scholar: An in-state, first time student who meets the Dec. 1 scholarship priority deadline, has a 27 on the ACT (writing required for 2010 applicants), or a 1210-1240 SAT score, and at least a 3.5 GPA will be selected as a Capstone Scholar and will receive $1,500 per year.

§  Collegiate Scholar: An in-state, first time student who meets the Dec. 1 scholarship priority deadline, has a 28-29 on the ACT or a SAT score of 1250-1320, at least a 3.5 GPA will be selected as a Collegiate Scholar and will receive $3,000 per year.

§  Presidential Scholar: An in-state, first time student who meets the Dec. 1 scholarship priority deadline, has a 30-36 on the ACT or a 1330-1600 SAT score, and at least a 3.5 GPA will be selected as a Presidential scholar and will receive the value of in-state tuition for four years.

4.  Best Buy scholarship: Sponsored by the Best Buy Children's Foundation, is open to students currently in grades 9-12 living in the U.S. or Puerto Rico, who are planning to attend an accredited U.S. or Puerto Rico college or vocational school after high school graduation. Scholarships are awarded to students who volunteer time to their communities, excel in academics, and participate in extra curricular activities. The application must be completed electronically online; no paper applications will be accepted. Application information for the next application period will become available in late December 2012. 5.  Auburn Freshman Scholarships: Scholarships: Your application to Auburn automatically places you in a pool for most university and college scholarships. However, some require a separate application and/or a free application for federal student aid (FAFSA).Students seeking scholarships should apply by December 1. 7.  The USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships: Sponsored by USA Funds, are open to financially needy students who are high school seniors, undergraduates, or graduate students. Applicants must be United States citizens or legal residents enrolled at least half time as an undergraduate, or full time as a graduate student, in an accredited institution and not in default on a student loan.

§  National Merit® & National Achievement® Scholars & Finalists: Full Tuition + Room + Board + Books & National Merit® & National Achievement® Semi-Finalists: Full Tuition + Room + Books: To be considered for a National Merit® or National Achievement® Scholarship, a student must be unconditionally admitted to the University and submit a letter documenting his or her selection by one of these national organizations on or before December 3, 2012.

§  Academic Scholarships: To be considered for an Academic Scholarship, a student must be unconditionally admitted to the University on or before December 3, 2012. With all academic credentials (high school transcript and ACT/SAT scores) being on record, the student will automatically be considered

§  Leadership Scholarships: These competitive scholarships are awarded to students who, based upon a strong record of leadership and volunteerism in high school, have demonstrated the potential to be campus leaders at UNA. In order to apply, a student must be unconditionally admitted to the University and submit a detailed resume of all activities performed during his or her 9-12th grade years. All documentation must be received on or before December 3, 2012. Sample resumes are available upon request.

§  Presidential Mentors Academy (PMA): Must be an Alabama resident (or reside in one of the eleven Mississippi and Tennessee counties considered by UNA to be "in-state"). UNA supports opportunities for students whose racial group is underrepresented within its student body. In this spirit, the PMA provides learning experiences for incoming minority freshmen. The program combines an emphasis on academic success with financial assistance and on-campus work opportunities for students who qualify for participation. The successful candidate must possess both leadership potential and the potential to succeed in a higher education environment. In order to apply, a student must be unconditionally admitted to the University, and must submit both a resume of high school activities and a letter of recommendation from a high school principal, counselor, or teacher on or before December 3, 2012. Interviews may be required.

§  Charles N. Martin, Jr., Scholarship: This scholarship is for students who attend high schools in Colbert, Lauderdale, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Cullman, Jackson, Marion, Morgan, Walker, or Winston Counties in Alabama; Alcorn, Benton, Itawamba, Marshall, Prentiss or Tishomingo Counties in Mississippi; or Giles, Hardin, Lawrence, McNairy, or Wayne Counties in Tennessee. In order to apply, a student must be unconditionally admitted to the University and have a letter of recommendation sent from his or her guidance counselor stating that he or she is applying for the Charles N. Martin, Jr. Scholarship and that there is a financial need. All scholarship documentation and admission materials are due on or before December 3, 2012.

9.  Rhodes Scholar: The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. The first American Scholars entered Oxford in 1904.

10.  American Cancer Society: Must be a cancer survivor with a diagnosis before age 21.

11.  The National Beta Club Scholarship: The program offers over $250,000 in scholarships to outstanding Beta Club members in their senior year. Over 200 scholarships are awarded each year. They range in value from $1,000 to $15,000.Eligibility Requirements: Senior high school students who are active National Beta Club members and duly registered with the national headquarters as of June 30 prior to their senior year may be nominated by their Beta Club chapter to participate in the scholarship competition. Selection Criteria: Selection of National Beta Club Scholars is based on a number of factors with special emphasis on academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, character, school and community service, and participation in National Beta Club activities. Two nominees per school.

12.  Alabama Law Foundation: Kids Chance Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will go to a student who has had a parent killed or permanently and totally disabled in an on the job accident. Apply online alfnc.org deadline in May.

13.  Alabama Trail of Tears: Students must have demonstrated successful academic performance and also have financial needs. Must be able to verify 1/6 native American heritage. Must re-apply each year. Deadline June.

14.  Prudential Spirit of Community Award: If you've made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C., by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award! Even more importantly, you could win recognition that might inspire other young people to follow your example. 15.  The Elks National Foundation “Most Valuable Student”: The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2012 competition. Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks. College students are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; permanent legal resident status does not qualify. Male and female students compete separately. 16.  Elks National Foundation Legacy Award: Who is Eligible? Any child or grandchild (or step-child, step-grandchild, or legal ward) of a living Elk who joined the order on or before April 1, 2009, or a charter member of a Lodge that was instituted on or after April 1, 2009, is eligible to apply. The Elk must also be a paid-up member through March 31, 2012. Great-grandchildren are not eligible. The applicant must be a high school senior. The applicant must apply online only. If the applicant's parent and grandparent are both Elk members, the applicant must apply through the parent's Elks Lodge. Students may apply for more than one ENF scholarship; however, they may win only one. In cases where the student qualifies for more than one, we will award the scholarship with the greater value. Legacy Awards may only be applied to accredited US American schools, colleges or universities. (Note: Applicants from Guam, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Philippines may apply Legacy Awards toward schools, colleges or universities in their respective homes.) 18.  Horatio Alger Alabama Scholarship: To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger Alabama Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria: be enrolled full time as a high school senior in Alabama, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation; have a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution located in the United States (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution); critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred; if higher, an explanation must be provided); involvement in co-curricular and community activities; demonstrate academic achievement (minimum grade point average of 2.0); be a resident of Alabama and be a citizen of the United States. http://www.horatioalger.org/scholarships/program_alabama.cfm. 19.  Linly Heflin Scholarship. $3,000 per year, renewable, to a limited number of Alabama women who have both significant economic need and a sound academic interest. Scholarships are restricted to 4-yr, Alabama, SACS accredited postsecondary schools. Minimum ACT is 23. 21.  The KFC Colonel’s Scholars Program: The KFC Colonel's Scholars Program® is looking for high school seniors with entrepreneurial drive, strong perseverance, demonstrated financial need, and who want to pursue a college education at an accredited public institution in the state they reside. http://www.kfcscholars.org/ Due December 1, 2012

22.  Buick Achievers Scholarship Program. One hundred scholarships up to $25,000 per year and one thousand scholarshipsat $2,000 each. Extraordinary people all have a “back” story: The steps they have taken, choosing to give back to their community. This program recognizes and supports their journey helping those who put forth the effort and find success in and out of the classroom, yet who cannot attend college without financial assistance. Applicants must be high school seniors or current college undergraduates, must be enrolled full time in a post-secondary school by Fall 2012, and must enroll in a field of study that focuses on engineering, technology, design, or business, with an interest in the automotive industry.
