Jacqui Henderson CBE
(Chair of Governors and of the Remuneration Committee)

Jacqui was Chief Executive of UK Skills and played a pivotal role in the international dimension of the very successful 2011International Skills Competition in London. In 2003 she was the first Regional Director for the Learning and Skills Council in Greater London. Other national positions include being Chief Executive of TEC National Council working closely with three consecutive Secretaries of State and other Government Minsters and Senior Executives across several Government Departments; a member of the DfES National Languages Advisory Group and a Director of the Basic Skills Agency.

From 2009 Jacqui has utilised her professional skills and expertise in the Health and Well-being sector taking on the role of Chair of Northumberland Care Trust and thenof Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group from April 2013 to 2015.

In April 2012 Jacqui took on the challenging role of Chair of Northumberland College leading the College through a turbulent year of transition taking a perceived failing College with critical performance and finance issues to become recognised as one of the top 10% of FE Colleges nationally with a very successful Grade 2 in the Ofsted Inspection in February 2013.

Jacqui is passionate about all aspects of education and has been Vice Chair of Newcastle University’s Council since August 2011 as well as being Chair of the University/Students Union Partnership Committee and Chair of the Remuneration Committee.

She is a Non- Executive Director of Policy Connect, a social enterprise working closely with parliamentarians and takes the lead role on issues of Further and Higher Education, Employment and Skills. She is a member of the Higher Education Commission; a Skills Commissioner. She joined the Board of Skills4the UKs leading provider of accredited career progression for women in 2015.

From 2007 to 2015 Jacqui ran Creative Leadership and Skills Ltd, a consultancy and project management company delivering executive coaching and strategic management support to a wide range of national clients and senior executives. Her experience and expertise helped secure multi-million pound grants for the advanced engineering sector.

Jacqui was given the Queen’s Award of Commander of the British Empire for services to education and training in January 2001.

Lynn Tomkins

(Vice-Chair and Chair of the Search Committee)

Lynn is a highly experienced operator in the skills environment. She is Chair of Skills4, the UK's leading provider of the accredited Career Advancement and Progression programme for women as well as other specialist programmes which deliver measurable business improvements for high performing companies by addressing gender and diversity balance within business.

Lynn, who was operations director for Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and advanced manufacturing is also one of Skills 4’s leading executive coaches.

She works with companies such as Rolls Royce, Atkins, BAE Systems, and Bombardier, delivering training and coaching to senior executives.

Lynn is also a Board and founding member of the UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF), of Policy Connect, the leading network of Parliamentary groups, research commissions, forums and campaigns working to inform and improve UK public policy and of Hexham Race Course.

She was the first ever woman Vice President of the Ship Building, Ship Repair Association and Lynn is also the current Vice Chair of Northumberland College.

Richard Dale

Ros Smith

(Governor and Chair of Audit Committee)

Appointed as a Governor in January 2012, Ros is Finance Director & Company Secretary of Northumberland Business Services Ltd.

Ros has previously been employed in senior financial management roles in the leisure industry and in radio stations, and started her career in the civil engineering sector.

Ros is the Chair of the Audit Committee.

Cllr Robert Arckless

(Governor)

Robert Arckless has served as a District and Town Councillor since 1983 and as County Councillor for Amble since 1989.

Robert is a past Town Mayor of Amble, Chairman of Alnwick District Council and is the current Chairman of Northumberland County Council.

Robert was born in Amble and has lived here all his life. He is a History graduate with a special interest in education and is a past Chairman of Governors at Amble Middle and Amble First Schools, both of which he attended as a pupil.

He was a founder member of Amble Development Trust. Robert chairs the District’s Crime and Disorder Partnership and the Youth Project Management Committee.

Stuart Evans

(Governor)

Stuart has extensive experience of senior management in National Parks. He led the practical changes to create Northumberland as a stand-alone national park authority. Stuart is an experienced project director managing significant rural regeneration initiatives in the tourism, environmental and economic fields.

Stuart’s experience was used at the Audit Commission where his secondment assisted local authorities across England improve their services and overall performance.

Currently, Stuart is combining his role as Head of Corporate Service at Northumberland National Park Authority with that of Project Director for The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre – the UK’s largest ever project by a national park which is due to open in summer 2017.

Stuart is a former pupil of King Edward VI High, Morpeth and has lived in Hexham for the last 25 years

Bob Paton CBE

(Governor)

Prior to joining Accenture I spent 20 years as a Civil Servant, 13 of which were spent working in IT, again mainly on major system implementation and delivery.

Alongside my Accenture role I am:

  • Non-Executive Chair of Regional Technology Centre North, a Sunderland based organisationwho are one of the major successes in the North East in their work in driving new products, innovation and business growth.
  • Chair of the Board of Governors for the ground breaking Studio West vocational school in Newcastle.
  • Lead of Project Steering Group for the recently approved University Technical College for IT/Health Care Science.
  • Member of the Board of Sunderland University.
  • Member of the Development Board of the Foundation of Light, who carry out great work with many thousands of young people in the region.
  • On the Board of Governors for Northumberland College
  • On the Board of Governors for the South Tyneside Career College.

I am from the North East of England,am a passionate supporter of Sunderland AFC, and in my spare time myself and my wife has converted our six acre smallholding to organically certified fruit and vegetable production.

Professor Peter Strike

(Governor)

Prior to becoming Vice Chancellor of the University of Cumbria Peter Strike was Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Knowledge Exchange and Business Engagement) at the University of Sunderland.

Following a highly successful career in research and teaching at the University of Liverpool, he became Vice Principal (Research and Knowledge Transfer) at Edinburgh Napier University, and then Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle.
Peter was awarded a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Sussex and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Peter has over 28 years of research and teaching experience at the University of Liverpool, contributing to a wide range of programmes at first and second year undergraduate, honours and masters levels in genetics, microbiology and biochemistry. He held a personal chair in Genetics and Microbiology at Liverpool, and was director ofteaching for the School of Life Sciences.

In support of his research interests in DNA repair and mutation, he has held fellowships and awards from the Royal Society, Wellcome Trust, Nuffield Foundation, EMBO and WHO as well as grants from BBSRC, MRC and NERC. He lists over 70 peer reviewed publications in addition to book chapters and conference contributions. He considers one of his major achievements to be the 47 PhD students he has supervised through to the successful completion of their studies.

He is a trustee of Tullie House Museum in Carlisle, as well as sitting on the boards of the Lake District Partnership, the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the LEP’s Employment and Skills Commission and the Cumbria Local Nature Partnership.

Peter was born and raised in Barrow in Furness and attended Barrow in Furness Grammar School for Boys. Peter’s interests include hill and mountain walking, long-distance walking and sailing. He is an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and an RYA-approved teacher. He also served for 17 years with the Royal Navy Reserve as senior training officer with the Liverpool Universities’ Royal Navy Unit. He supports Newcastle United.

Paul Emmerson (Staff Governor – Teaching)

Paul is a full time lecturer in hairdressing, having working at Northumberland College for over 10 years. Previously, Paul worked for the prestigious hairdressing company Saks as a stylist and as their national trainer. He is a very passionate and dedicated member of the Northumberland College teaching staff.

Simon Miles (Staff Governor – Support)

Simon Miles is the ‘MIS Timetable and Register Co-Ordinator’ at Northumberland College. Before starting his career at the college in 2011, Simon has had various knowledge, understanding and experience working in management, telecommunications and customer care.

He is a very passionate and dedicated member of the Northumberland College support staff, taking on extra voluntary roles and duties across College such as being a lead Health Advocate and coordinating a Joint Health and Well-being Steering Group bringing together staff and students.

Simon is also passionate about the community and is a member of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust giving views and opinions on the vision of the NHS in Northumberland with the aim of improving the experience for staff, Patients and carers.

His aim is to help lead Northumberland College to excellence and to make the College a cornerstone institution in South East Northumberland for students, staff and the wider community.

Simon is also a member of the Audit Committee.

Kayleigh Moffat – Student Governor

Kayleigh, who is studying Uniformed Public Services at level 3, joined the Governing Body in December 2015. In addition to becoming a new Governor, she serves on the Enterprise Strategy Committee.

Lewis Mortimer – Student Governor

Lewis is also studying UniformedPublic Services and serveson the Safeguarding and Prevent Committee.
