Job Title / PARLIAMENTARY & PRESSASSISTANT
Reporting to / Chief of Staff – Green Party parliamentary office
Main Purpose / SUPPORT MP IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR DUTIES
Key Tasks
  • Administrative and organisational tasks to keep the parliamentary office running smoothly.
  • Promote the MPs work to local media.

Key Responsibilities
  • Help with diary management, including booking travel, responding to diary requests and invites, booking rooms and other venues, organising events and liaising with other politicians/key members of staff.
  • Acknowledging/responding to enquiries including on policy, and regular proactive correspondence with constituents.
  • Ensuring information is disseminated as required and maintaining good central points of access across offices.
  • Creating and maintainingcontact and other databases.
  • Keeping filing systems up to date and organised. Carrying out filing tasks.
  • Keeping parliamentary office well stocked with stationery and other supplies.
  • Maintaining correspondence tracking systems and carry out tasks such as sending copies of Minister’s replies, parliamentary questions and speeches to constituents.
  • Financial administration to help ensure compliance with parliamentary and electoral commission requirements.
  • Systems management, including making recommendations for how they could be improved.
  • Identifying stories and promoting the work of the MP to local media, including by writing and sending press releases, proposing social media content, drafting articles & comment pieces and other communications.
  • Building good working relationships with local media contacts and responding to breaking news.
  • Working closely with the parliamentary press officer and the constituency team on media work and to deliver strategic messages.
  • Taking and responding to phone messages. Opening and sorting the post.
  • Liaising with constituents to book tours and visits to the House of Commons.
  • Meeting and greeting visitors to the House of Commons.
  • Liaising with the Parliamentary ICT team to resolve IT problems in the parliamentary office and with the national party’s IT support staff.
  • Uploading content to relevant Green Party websites.
  • Other tasks essential to the smooth running of the parliamentary office.
  • Adherence to the Data Protection Act principles and respect the confidentiality of data at all times.
Person specification
Excellent IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office, email, social media and working with websites
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including a friendly telephone manner.
Well organised and efficient.
Experience of media relations and press work.
Able to manage a workload that involves some regular and some one-off tasks, meeting deadlines and working to a high standard of accuracy. Very proactive and a self-starter.
Reliable, trustworthy and discreet.
A good team player who is flexible and adaptable.
Some knowledge of Brighton is desirable.
