Dear Parents,

Next week our class will be studying about bugs. We will learn that insects have three body parts (head, thorax, and abdomen), two antennae, and six legs. Some have wings. We will discover that spiders have two body parts and eight legs.

_____ The VIP activity involves letting your child go outside and look for bugs in your yard. Ask him/her to observe the environment, noticing the plants, grass, trees, etc. Get him/her to note the size, color, and general appearance of any bugs he/she sees. Once your child has found some little creepy crawlies, have him/her draw the yard (plants, grass, trees) on the half sheet of manila paper found in the folder. The drawing should take up the entire page. Now look for the small piece of paper that is taped on the half sheet. Get your child to lift it and draw one of the bugs he/she saw in the yard. When your child draws your yard on the paper, make sure he/she draws on this top flap as well. I want the page to look like your back yard. This paper will look like a page in a flap book. Finally, have your child write a sentence on the back of the page telling about what he/she found. Return this.

_____ Math Focus: Students should be able to add numbers to 5 fluently (fast!). They should also be able to add numbers to 10 using pictures or objects or fingers. Please have your child practice these skills by completing pages 283 and 284 (found in the folder). Return this. Make sure that your child writes his/her name on the paper.

____ I have read the following books with my child. We read 5 books or 50 minutes.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Our new words are “big” and “little.” The book, Flowers, will put these words back into text.

_____ Have your child read the “et” word family list.

_____Please review the words on the Fry list and on the Kindergarten Sight Word list. Your child should be able to read these words quickly.

____Review: letters, letter sounds, shapes, shape descriptions, numbers to 20, sets to 20, counting by 1’, 5’s, and 10’s to 100, counting by 2’s to 20, writing letters without a pattern, writing numbers 0-31 in order without a pattern, naming the seasons and describing them, naming the five senses, retelling a story, identifying rhyming words, and anything else on the report card that is marked with a 1 or 2. We only have a few weeks to master the kindergarten objectives. If your child is having difficulty with specific areas, please take the time to review with him or her. We are reviewing here at school as well.
