Online Help

Accessing

CRC is available through the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries Web page, “IUCAT/Databases” (

Access CRC from the alphabetical list of all databases.

Once on the home page, selecting the Table of Contents link allows you to browse the table of contents directory. The Table of Contents initially shows the highest section level, usually chapters. Clicking on the plus sign icon next to the section name (see figure below) opens the heading so you can see the entire contents. Subsections may also be opened to see their contents.

To view text, interactive tables or interactive graphs for a particular product, select the hyperlinked text in the "text" or "data" column. PDF text is generally found in the "text" column. Interactive tables and graphs are found in the "data" column. Interactive tables display the number of records contained in that table as a number in parenthesis next to the hyperlink.

Breadcrumb Trail (Path): As you browse PDF contents, the Path: indicator (see figure above) changes according to your relative location within the product. The current location is displayed in black text, while previous locations are displayed as hyperlinks. Clicking on a hyperlink will open upper levels of the Web site.

Creating a Search

  • Conducting Keyword Searches:

Searches

Note: Searches are not case sensitive.

  • Conducting Data Searches (Advanced Search):

Search

Note: Only searches textual and numeric property values of tables. PDFs are not searched.

Viewing Records

Results

Once you have conducted a search, the system returns a compiled ‘search results’ screen for all the content products that were hit:

The search results can be viewed in ‘Table’ or ‘Text’ (PDF) formats.

  • Reading Tables: Tables
  • Once in the ‘table’ view, the "Search Table" feature can be used either to refine search results or to search the entire table: Tables

Marking Records

Records can be marked only in the “table” view. Records can be selected by clicking on the box next to each record. Just click on the boxes to select those records and then click on the Select Rows button to display only the selected set of records.

Printing / Emailing / Saving Records

  • Printing Results:
  • Text Format: When the results are viewed in “Text” (PDF) format, the Print button of the Acrobat Reader can be used to print the document.
  • Table Format: For printing “tables”, set the printer's orientation to Landscape in order to get wider output of tables and click on the browser’s Print button.
  • Saving Results: The results in the “Text” (PDF) format can be saved by using the Save button of the Acrobat Reader. The results in the table format can only be saved as an html file by using the Save As button of the browser.

How To Find Articles or Books Not Available Full-Text

To view full records you can use IUCAT. Just type in the title of the book or full journal title in the search box of IUCAT. Click on the Title or Periodical Title button and this will bring up the location and other information about the availability of the book or journal if held by IU.

Quitting

To exit the system, just close the browser window.

Search Tips and Techniques

Examples:

Truncation symbols stand in for letters.

At this time, wild cards are not implemented. Using a wild card, such as an asterisk truncate (*acid), will cause the system to return zero results.

Boolean Operators focus/broaden your searches.

  • Type AND between keywords to narrow your search. Citations must contain all of the search words you specify:

For example: moulding and density will only find records containing the density of moulding.

  • To broaden a search, use OR to connect terms. Citations can contain just one or both of the search words:

For example: moulding or methyl ethyl ketone will find records with containing either moulding or methyl ethyl ketone or records containing both.

  • To exclude a term, type NOT in front of it:

For example: ketone not moulding will return all records containing ketone, but none of them will include moulding.

Nesting Use parentheses to preserve the logic of your search:

For example: (ethyl ketone) will return records containing ethyl ketone as a phrase instead of two individual words placed far apart in the text.
