Course Description

The seventh grade art rotation is a trimester studio based course aimed to help students strengthen and expand their art making skills. Students are given an opportunity to explore a variety of media, techniques and materials, and learn about different artistic traditions and styles. Lessons consist of artistic experiences designed to reinforce concepts introduced in previous years. The class will also examine the role of art in our present days, focusing on how, and what are the questions and concerns that artists wish to communicate though their work. In the second semester, students will be required to pursue a body of personal work with a medium of choice.

Lesson one:Observational drawing.

Students draw a variety of subjectmatter fromdirect observation using contour drawing methods

Lesson two:

Composition principles- Call & response in visual art:

Students experiment with call and response approach to art through a variety of traditional and unconventional drawing exercises. The aim of these exercises is to acquaint students with a fundamental thought process of art making.

Lesson Three:

Color theories and schemes.

Students explore color theories and schemes through a variety of painting exercises.

Lesson four

Conveying a message in art- composition and main idea

Students are challenged to create an original painting with a personal message demonstrating understanding of color and drawing concepts covered in class

Lesson five:

Digital media art:

Students explore digital media art and advertisement art concepts and techniques and are challenged to convey a political messagecombining text and image .

5. Develop proficiency in handling tools and materials;

6. Interpret the meanings of historical and contemporary paintings through critique;

8. Increase self-confidence and independence in the process of creating a painting;

The final grade will be determined using the following components:

  • Art work 40% (summative)
  • Studio Process 60%.

Assessment rubrics, with students’ input will be used to grade art work.

Classroom Expectations

The Art Studio is a shared space and your special place: respect the classroom / studio.

A working studio needs detailed attention in terms of organization, proper use of equipment, and appropriate use of tools. It is a creative and collaborative environment; do your best to keep it clean and organized, do not be wasteful; be green!

Respect Others. Know the difference between constructive criticism and insult.

Only one person speaks at a time. Please do not have private conversations while I or another peer am talking. It is a distraction.

Keep complaining and negativity to yourself. If you have a problem, please speak to me in private

Clean up after yourself. Your area (this also means the floor) should look as it did when you first arrived.

Bring your Sketchbook to every class! Come prepared to learn, experiment and create! There will be scheduled sketchbook checks.

Challenge yourself. This is the only way that you will grow. Reach High!

Find your own creative voice. It is in there. It is special and unique.

Express it!

Keep your phones out of sight. That includes no texting.

No iPod or mp3 players. Communication amongst your peers is essential.

Respect your art materials. Nothing leaves the room without permission.

Remember that everyone shares the supplies. Take what you need, but do not be wasteful.

Follow the rules of the dress code.

Have fun and do your best.

Bathroom:

You may use the bathroom when absolutely necessary but not during the first ten or

last ten minutes of the period.

To use the bathroom you must sign out of the Bathroom Log, and take the pass.

If abused, bathroom privileges will be taken away unless you have a doctor’s note.

Food and Drink are not allowed in the studio.

No electronics intheclassroom (cellphones,IPODS,headphones ,etc..
