Job Purpose

The focus of the British Gas Energy Trust work is to assist low income and vulnerable households where people have health problems exacerbated by fuel poverty. The aim is to demonstrate a positive health impact, by taking a holistic approach that balances home efficiency measures with wider other interventions to improve health and wellbeing. Age UK Sunderland will work with our partners Sunderland Carers Centre and Sunderland Care & Support to deliver this work.

The Community Outreach Worker will proactively promote and support all aspects of work of the British Gas EnergyTrust and undertake training and awareness raising in a community outreach environment to individuals, community groups and frontline health and social care staff.

Job Description

To develop all aspects of the work of British Gas Energy Trust work including:

  • Promote the work of British Gas Energy Trust to partners and the wider community including frontline health and social care staff
  • Undertake home visits to clients to establish residents needs and advise and implement measures such as access to grants, physical energy efficiency measures, alongside soft energy efficiency measures such as energy advice and switching and benefit entitlement advice and referral
  • Complete all relevant paperwork
  • Keep a case file for each client and update accordingly
  • To liaise with Warm Up North and other energy efficiency providers and make referrals as appropriate
  • Provide monitoring information as required
  • Ensure Healthy Homes health Survey is completed for each client
  • Engage with front line health and social care staff to deliver energy efficiency training awareness
  • Engage with community sector groups to deliver energy efficiency training and awareness sessions
  • Identify gaps in service provision for older people and make appropriate recommendations
  • Undertake appropriate training as required
  • Attend conferences and events as required
  • Act as safeguarding Alerter
  • To abide by and implement all policies and procedures of Age UK Sunderland, including being aware of and responsible corporately and as an individual for Health & Safety policy
  • To undertake all reasonable tasks, in keeping with the level of responsibility of the post, as requested by the Director

Essential Criteria

Good standard of education

Experience of working within the voluntary sector

Experience of undertaking presentations to a variety of audiences

Understanding of and empathy with the needs and aspirations of older people

Knowledge of fuel poverty and energy efficiency measures and the impact on people’s health and wellbeing.

Be a self starter with the enthusiasm and flair to achieve positive results

Ability to manage a busy workload and prioritise effectively

I.T. literate with excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to research and compile detailed reports and presentations

Ability to quickly form good relationships both internally and externally at all levels and represent Age UK Sunderland in a positive manner

A flexible approach to work

Possess a full, clean driving licence, have access to a car for work
