FYI
Math in the classroom: FACT POWER!!!! Please be sure to practice multiplication and division facts with your child each night for 3-5 minutes. You can play a quick game like My Pile, Your Pile. In this game if the child gets the fact correct it goes in his pile, if not it goes in the giver’s pile. Count to see the score and have your child go through the giver’s pile again. At this time most of the children are comfortable with the 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. They are still tricked by the 0s, 3s, 4s, 6s, and anything with a 7,8, or 9. If your child is ready, sprinkle in some11s and 12s for a challenge.
If your child gets stuck, prompt them to use one of our efficient multiplication fact strategies. That no longer includes drawing a picture or an array. We have moved on to mental techniques such as doubling, adding or subtracting a group or groups, using squares or near squares, and breaking a fact apart.
Remember that when you are practicing facts it is important not to take away all the familiar facts and drill on the hard facts. Children need to experience success during practice in order to want to meet the challenge when a tricky fact comes along. HAPPY MULTIPLYING…and DIVIDING
Xtramath: All students have been programmed to the multiplication math facts. Please be sure to log on and practice at home.
