NCETM: Influential Mathematics Teachers Conference,

31stMarch/1stApril, 2009.

Empowering and Supporting ASTs and other teachers who have an influential role in supporting others.

Dear Influential Mathematics Teacher,

The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) aims to raise the professional status of those engaged in the teaching of mathematics so that the mathematical potential of learners will be fully realised.

As someone who has is working with other teachers be it as an Advanced Skills Teacher, Leading Mathematics Teacher or similar, the NCETM believes that you are a key influencer in ensuring that standards in mathematics continue to rise. You may well be working in a variety of roles now, but your status is a major achievement and we know that you are an expert in learning and teaching mathematics.

There are currently 676 qualified mathematics ASTs in England, who have the potential to be a major force in improving mathematics education. The NCETM wants to help fully realise this potential by establishing a formal national AST network to share best practice, support individuals and give a national voice to the mathematics AST community. To initiate this network the NCETM is hosting a National Influential Mathematics Teachers Conference in Exeter in March/April 2009. This is the fourth of such national conferences, the first three being held in London, Birmingham and Leeds back in October 2008. This extra venue has been put on to particularly cater for those in the South West

The event will be held at the Thistle Hotel, in Exeter and will run from 5:30pm on the TuesdayMarch 31st until 4:00pm on Wednesday April 1st 2009.

This event is completely free (including accommodation); however, we are unable to provide supply or travel costs but would hope that your school sees this network as a key CPD opportunity.

The conference will be a mix of hands-on workshops and networking opportunities.Workshops will be run by regional ASTs and will be relevant to secondary and primary colleagues.

To request your free place on one of the above conferences you need to be a member of the NCETM online community so either login to our portal or join free at then select Courses Events from the top navigation bar, underInfluential Mathematics Teachers Conference click Find out more, selectthe venue you wish to attend and complete an application form.
