Primary Care Grants for Professional Travel

Attending professional meetings is critical to career advancement, in terms of getting one’s work recognized, learning about the work of others, networking, and participating in professional service. When a scientist is the primary caregiver (adult or child), these responsibilities present an additional hurdle to attending meetings. While sometimeschildcare is provided by meetings –although often it is not – it is usually at a substantial cost to the parent. These additional costs of care are often not reimbursable by federal grants or state accounts. The College of Science is continuing the program to provide small grants to cover additional travel cost associated with primary care costs.

Any faculty, staff, postdoc, or student wishing to take advantage of such assistance must submit a primary care application form. The amount of support requested must be justified up to the maximum available of $350* per family per event. Funding is limited to one awardper person per calendar year and the event must be out of Brazos County. While applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, the request will be evaluated by the primary care subsidy committee three times a year. Requests either can be submitted either before or after the travel, but receipts are required and must be turned in. Reimbursement will not be possible until all receipts and memo have been submitted. There is a finite pool of support. In the event that the number of requests for grants exceeds, the funding available, preference will be given to applicants in the early stages of their careers.

Applications are due in the College of Science by the first Monday of October, February, or June annually.

*Please note this will be paid as a supplemental check and the money is considered as additional income so the appropriate taxes will be taken out.
