ELO Title: Sports in Literature (English 10 credit)

Competencies:

1)Student will respond to primary and secondary source historical literature in genre writing that is authentic and demonstrates the role of sports in society.

2)Student will demonstrate comprehension of American sports writing in various themes and genres.

3)Student will demonstrate skill in persuasive writing by using specific narrative strategies and text structures to formulate, support and develop a thesis regarding a change in sports rule or culture.

4)Student will read and interpret primary source historical documents, such as biographies and old sports magazines, and demonstrate knowledge of author’s purpose in writing by using specific writing strategies.

5)Student will illustrate understanding of sports-themed poetry by using research of texts and images and gathering these to create a presentation.

6)Student will research the role of sports in media and literature in countries outside of the United States and draw comparisons to the role of sports in our culture.

7)Student will demonstrate the ability to effectively complete writing tasks specific to aspects of journalism by composing sports articles for newspapers and magazines.

Internship options and goals:

a)Physical training with an athletic team - To learn the basics of assessing and diagnosing sports injuries. To research and write about common athlete ailments and what types of treatment are most effective for each.

b)Physical Education class at an elementary school – To work with younger children to teach them the rules and expectations of various games and sports and to create instruction manuals, written at a level that second and third graders can understand for at least 5 different games or sports.

c)Sports goods store – To look at advertising and marketing for various types and brands of athletic apparel and to create an ad campaign for his favorite line of apparel.

Academics:

Student researched moments in the history of sports, which transcended the field, such as the 36 Olympic protests, Michael Jordan’s marketability, sports union strikes, how the 1980 Miracle on Ice impacted the Cold War and other such events. The student researched and wrote about these moments. Additionally, the student would learn about a style of writing (ie. journalism, persuasive essays, journaling, etc.) then would create a piece of writing relating to a different event in sports.

Final Project:

The student created an ESPN-likeSportscenter broadcast that reported on the different events and/or athletes the student had written about over the course of the semester. The student wrote a 1 minute to 1:30 clip for each story and pre-recorded the “broadcast.” The student presented the broadcast to a review team and explained in detail the style of writing used to tell each story.
