MINIMUM EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

To whom it may concern

Hereby it is confirmed that the purchase of a computer and a calculator is required of students for the course of B.Eng. See the 2010 Yearbook of the Faculty of Engineering for rule I.2.13.1 (equipment) and rule I.2.13.3 (use of calculators during examinations).

We realize the cost of the equipment, but computers fulfil an indispensable role in engineering practice, making it essential that students become proficient in computer applications during their studies, before entering the industry.

The following computer configuration will conform with minimum requirements:

(Option 3 or better as seen on the special offer as seen on http://www.nwu.ac.za/studentlaptop)

LAPTOP: CORE i5 / CENTRINO DUO
·  Intel Core i5-430M 2.27GHz CPU or better
·  4GB RAM (minimum for CAD programs)
·  320 GB hard disk drive
·  256MB dedicated graphics card
·  DVD-ROM optical disc drive
·  15” screen (for CAD programs)
·  Sound card
·  Windows 7 Home Premium operating system
·  Network card (for accessing the intranet if residing on campus)
Optional: separate big 19” computer screen

Furthermore, it is advisable for students to acquire an USB flash drive for transferring data between computers.

The following calculators will meet with the requirements:

§  Alphanumeric, semi-programmable scientific calculator with basic mathematical and scientific functions, with the capability of handling multiple variable functions.

§  For certain courses in Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering in the third and fourth years a fully-programmable calculator capable of performing advanced matrix calculations.

Please note that all calculators must have a clear key so that a memory clear can be performed before use in examinations. Failure to comply with this rule will be considered a serious transgression.
