Landscape Design School Series XXIV, Course IV,

February 22-23, 2016

LOCATION: George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, College Station, Tx

The George Bush Presidential Library at Texas A & M University will be the site of Landscape Design School IV, Feb 22-23, 2016. The Schools are sponsored by Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. & the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A & M University.

Mrs. Diane Perez of Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. and Dr. William C. Welch, Texas AgriLife Extension Service, announce the last in the current series which is offered in four separate schools, approximately six months apart, each with 10 hours of instruction, in the Bryan-College Station area. These courses offer an opportunity to learn from professional landscape architects and horticulturists about how successful landscapes are designed.

For this course our instructors will be:

Barbara Coody, MLA, will begin our program with “Development of Landscape Architecture from WWII to Present”. This is an exciting period and she will briefly summarize major movements as a foundation for contemporary landscape design. She will discuss large scale land use planning, resource management, conservation, impact of high density housing, mass transportation systems and the information age. These are important concerns to the population of modern day America.

We are pleased that Dr. Neil G. Odenwald, former chairman for the Landscape Architecture program at LSU will be presenting two very interesting topics for our program. Neil has been instrumental in the success of garden restorations and managing historical sites such as Longue Vue Gardens in New Orleans, Rosedown & Afton Villa Plantations in St. Francisville and Biedenharn Gardens in Monroe, LA. At our course Neil will speak on “Contemporary Landscape Design” & “Redesign of Areas”.

BobRuth, ASLA Landscape Architect, will discuss “Designs for the Future”. Bob’s special talents include building and interior design, the use of carefully selected plantings and incorporation of water features. Dr. Whitney Griffin is a new Horticultural Sciences faculty member with responsibility for teaching our students interesting graphic presentation techniques along with assembling all these into a specific real life project. Dr. Griffin has also had practical experience in creating and maintaining green roofs and living walls.

Dr. Joe Novakspent many year in the Horticultural Sciences Department teaching students gardening concepts, details of Horticultural Therapy and food production. He is currently involved in many aspects of teaching horticulture in the Houston area. His topic for the course is “History & Development of Community Gardens”.

Alan King, ASLA,is another local practicing landscape architect who is well known for his residential landscape design. He will discuss “Guidelines for Evaluating Landscape Design”, including design theory, principles, design process, and plans.

Our Optional Topic will be given by Tim Hartmann, Extension EarthKind® Specialist in the Department of Horticultural Sciences, Texas A&M University. Tim will address the concept of “The Edible Landscape”. Everyone would like for the environment around their dwellings and workplace to be beautiful. More so than ever before, there is a strong interest in growing plants for food. Rather than edible plants being grown only in separate areas there is great potential for including them in the landscape. Tim will show many examples of how to incorporate fruits and vegetables into today’s garden. His enthusiasm for fruiting plants in the landscape is contagious!

At the end of the first day’s program participants are invited to a complimentary wine and cheese reception hosted by Stewart Thompson of Martha’s Bloomers Garden Center, Navasota. There will be an optional dinner opportunity after the reception.

Master Gardeners who complete a course and pass the test may apply to their MG Chapter to receive 12 hours of credit toward their requirements for continuing education. Texas Garden Club members who successfully pass the examination for all four courses are eligible to become nationally accredited Landscape Design Consultants. Texas Certified Nursery Professionals who pass the course may apply this to their requirement for recertification with the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association (TNLA)
