1. Select a story from the following list:

“The Invalid’s Story”—page 362
2. Closely read the story paying attention to the setting, narrative point of view, conflict, plot, theme, characterization, and literary terms.
3. Create a poster containing the following:
1. The setting
o Time period?
o Place(s) of action?
2. Narrative point of view: example and explanation
o 1st person?
o 2nd person?
o 3rd person limited?
o 3rd person omniscient?
3. Central conflict: example and explanation
o Internal or External?
o If external, man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. society?
4. A plot line detailing key elements: quote or paraphrase for each of the following steps
o Exposition
o Rising action
o Climax
o Falling action
o Resolution
5. The theme:
o The underlying message, or 'big idea.' In other words, what critical belief about life is the author trying to convey in the writing of a novel, play, short story or poem? This belief, or idea, transcends cultural barriers. It is usually universal in nature. When a theme is universal, it touches on the human experience, regardless of race or language.
6. Character chart
o Characters

7. Illustration
o Illustrate a key scene
o Explain the significance of the scene (5-8 sentences)
8. Literary terms (Use your notes and handouts to help you)
o Identify at least four examples of literary terms
o Provide an example for the term you find
o Explain how and why the term affects the story
