COURSE DESCRIPTION

Pre-Calculus reviews and builds upon Algebra 2 while blending together all of the concepts and skills that must be mastered for a college-level calculus course. A functional approach provides for the integration of all Trigonometry concepts, plus…the relationships between equations and graphs for polynomial equations, translation of axes between rectangular, polar and complex, and sequences and series. Lessons and common assessments for this course have been developed collaboratively using best practice and Indiana State Standards as a framework.

Essential Outcomes

  1. Recognize and graph polynomial, rational, algebraic, absolute value, logarithmic, trigonometric, and exponential functions. Use them to solve word problems. Apply transformations to any of these functions.
  2. Understand the concepts of range and domain for each of the above functions.
  3. Solve right triangles and oblique triangles. Apply and use the law of sines and law of cosines.
  4. Measure angles with radians as well as degrees and memorize the unit circle.
  5. Use basic trigonometric identities to prove additional identities.
  6. Define and use polar coordinates. Understand the relationship between polar and Cartesian (rectangular) graphs.
  7. Use basic operations with complex numbers. Convert complex numbers to trigonometric form.
  8. Find a specific term in a sequence. Find the sum of arithmetic, geometric, an infinite series.
  9. Develop the concept of a limit.

Student Evaluation:

Student’s 18 week grades will be figured with the following items

weighted by percentage below.

Common Assessments: Quiz grade

Tests: 70%

Quizzes: 20%

Homework: 10% (Most assignments are graded on completion)

End of Semester Final Exam: 20% of semester grade.

Semester Grade: 18 week grade 80% along with final exam 20%

***Semester Grade is continuous***

Make Up Work: It is your responsibility to get any missed work. Students are responsible for gathering missed work on their first day back to school whether they have class or not (block days).

Late Work: Daily assignments are due the next day unless otherwise indicated, collected late work will result in a penalty. It is the expectation that daily assignments are completed and worked on in order to keep pace with the material.

Class Expectations:

1. Inthe room when the bell rings.

  1. Have appropriate supplies (book, paper, writing implement) *Calculator – Graphing TI83, TI83+, TI84+ (Calculators that factor or have palm capabilities cannot be used on test.) Calculators will have the memory cleared before and after quizzes and tests.
  2. Actively take part in all examples and notes.
  3. Work on math assignments when given time. If finished, work on other homework.
  4. Respect all!
  5. Clean up after yourself
  6. Please do not get out of your seat during instruction time.
  7. Passing period is the time to go to the restroom/locker
