Kumu 2 Kumu Content Area Agenda
Content Area: Speech
Meeting Location: Middle School Keli’imaika’i #111
TIME / OBJECTIVE-OUTCOME/DECISION/ACTION / RESPONSIBLE / ACTION ITEMS1:30- 1:45 / Pule
Welcome/Sign In/ Overview of the Day / Gabe (pule)
LeaDan (Overview) / Gabe is a good prayer, I guess.
1:45 – 2:30 / Mixed grade-level/school groups (2-4 kumu each) share their Student Work Samples online and discuss/answer the following questions:
- How is the WEO clear and aligned to my content?
- How is the use of the WEO developmentally appropriate?
it to make my teaching decisions, I said it didn’t.”
Leadan “If we’re only now explaining how our content is connected to the WEO, we’re just matching, not using it toward actually creating content.”
All – concur.
Wade – I think I see growth in my students and the content. For this WEO, I’ve witnessed growth.
LeaDan – There is growth being demonstrated in our class.
Kalei – We already include WEO values and principles in our curriculm.
Gabe – These values aren’t exclusive. I don’t know how they could be.
Wade – led us on tour of middle school so that we could better understand the campus that students are coming from prior to high school. / The Speech Department believes that it has been teaching the concepts in the WEO long before the WEO became a part of our curriculum. We found it difficult to reflect upon what we learned from the WEO when we are in the stage of connecting what we already do to the WEO.
2:30 – 3:00 / Large Group complete Handout:
- GAPS and OVERLAPS
- Writing a WEO Statement that answers the question: What does this WEO look like in our K-12 content area?
- Identify next steps (ex. Bringing in more Student Work Samples, work with another WEO)
LeaDan – Justifies gaps – the nature of our courses, when they can/have to be taken.
Gabe – Gaps are easy to prevent, because we’re small, we don’t have the students for very long.
Wade – recommends that we next step Ku I keao. Be of the world.
All – concur.
LeaDan – Great! Now, we just need to demonstrate how we make our students worldy.
Growth, our chosen WEO focus for this meeting, was pretty easy for us to discuss because we scaffold within our classes as well as between campuses. Our GAPS would be reflected in the varying times between when students enroll in Speech courses. We couldn’t find any specific GAPS based on how we teach the WEO of Growth otherwise. There is some overlap between campuses but again that is primarily due to the varying times that students enroll in Speech. / It was suggested that Growth may have been too easy to focus on so as our next step we chose to focus on a different WEO - Kūikeao – Be of the world. To be like the world in which one lives. Live in interdependence with all that surrounds me physically, spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually.
3:00-3:30 pm / Wrap-Up
