JEROEN PEK QUARTET

The JEROEN PEK QUARTET plays original compositions mainly written by the bandleader. The roots of the repertoire are in the late hard-bop idiom in which the compositions are a hang-up for adventure and communication. This is intensified by the uncommon line-up with flute in the frontline. The acoustic rhythm section is a very sensitive and alert unit that completes this extremely vivid quartet. The group contains three generations of Dutch Jazz musicians. This is very much a live band!

The new album “Uplands” (Munich Records) is out now!!

JEROEN PEK is one of the very few jazz flute players from Holland. Besides his own projects he played with a great deal of the Dutch jazz scene like Michiel Borstlap, Eric Vloeimans, Pierre Courbois and Nueva Manteca. International he toured in France, England, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Poland. With the Jeroen Pek Band he released two c.d.’s. As a composer he received three times honourable mentions during the composition contest of the Jazz composers Alliance in Boston (USA) and was with the best ten (190 competitors) on the composition contest of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Washington (USA).

The career of pianist ROB VAN DEN BROECK starts in the late 60’s and covers a great deal of the European jazz history. He played and recorded, among others, with Ben Webster, Joe Farrell, Billy Higgins, Kenny Wheeler, Philip Catharine, Tony Levin, Enrico Rava, Charlie Mariano, Chris Hinze, Joachim Kühne and is member of the European Jazz Ensemble. He toured in Europe, Canada and Australia. He feels himself at home in many different styles in jazz music (between bop and free jazz)..

WIRO MAHIEU is recognized as probably the bass player with the most virtuosity in Holland. Besides that quality he is also a very melodic and subtle musician. Next to his Low Motion Trio (3 cd’s) he played with many different musicians like Thomas Chapin, Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Mariano, Denise Jannah and is also member of the Jeroen Pek Band. He toured through Europe and Asia. In 1996 he won the very prestigious Dutch jazz contest the Wessel Ilcken Award.

Drummer ONNO WITTE is very much an all-round drummer with a great deal of energy and creativity. He toured through Europe, USA and Kenya. With his Brazilian Batucada band Medicamento he won the Phillip Morris Street Parade Award and the International Oranjeboom Jazz contest where he also received the award for the best instrumentalist. In 2000 he was selected in the top ten of the best Dutch jazz drummers during the readers poll of the drum magazine “Slagwerkkrant”.
