Grogan-Kaylor, A., & Otis, M. (2007). The predictors of parental use of corporal punishment. Family Relations, 56(1), 80-91.

This paper examines possible contextual factors that may influence a parent’s use of corporal punishment. Factors like ethnicity, gender, or beliefs about effectiveness of corporal punishment influence the use of corporal punishment.[MSOffice1]This article is likely very reliable, the researchers looked at the 2000 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to get their information. Grogan-Kaylor is fairly well known for his research. [MSOffice2]I don’t think that I will use this information. It is reliable, but I don’t think it will really be helpful to me; I don’t really want my paper to go in this direction.[MSOffice3]

Marion, M. (2003). Guidance of young children. New Jersey: Merrill Prentice Hall.

This book is a textbook used to instruct college students going into the fields of child development and education. It provides information on how to handle various situations that may arise with children. [MSOffice4]This book is in its sixth edition, if it wasn’t of high quality, it would not have made it through so many editions. The book follows the standards and practices of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the main guiding body for child development. [MSOffice5]While I won’t use the majority of this book, there are a few sections that are quite helpful. The sections on basic needs of children and how they learn and develop will be great sources.[MSOffice6]

Pasztor, E.M., Leighton, M., Mathews, J., Polowy, M.E., & Watson, J. (2003). Pride book revisited, preservice training for prospective foster parents and adoptive parents. Illinois: Child Welfare League of America.

This is a national training manual used to train those who are considering becoming foster or adoptive parents. It covers information about the foster system, identifying abuse, and some basic parenting skills. [MSOffice7]The Child Welfare League of America is a reputable organization and a good authority on children’s needs. The Pride training program is one of the largest foster parent training programs in the country and is used by California to train foster parents. [MSOffice8]This will be a very useful source since it provides background information into the foster care system. This is also a good example of a program that is already in place which could be modified to fit the suggested parental courses.[MSOffice9]

Whitney, S.D., Tajima, E.A., Herrenkohl, T.I., & Huang, B. (2006). Defining child abuse: Exploring variations in ratings of discipline severity among child welfare practitioners. Child and Adolescent Social Work Journal, 23(3), 316-342.

This paper examines how child welfare practitioners rate the severity of discipline practices and compare that to practitioners in 1977. The study found that behaviors that were not rated as severely in 1977 were rated much more severely in this study (shaking an infant or embarrassing a child in front of others for example). [MSOffice10]The researchers in this study thoroughly evaluated the material and tried to control for contextual factors. This study is also a longitudinal study, which adds to its validity[MSOffice11]. This study will be beneficial to me because it helps define maltreatment and lays out some concrete specific examples. Parents might think that something is acceptable when really it has crossed the line and this article will help identify that.[MSOffice12]
