Ed-Visionary report:
Northwest Regional NYI President Report
November 6, 2007
To the Members of the Northwest Regional NYI Council,
I bring to you my 4th annual report as the Regional President of the great Northwest Region. I consider it a privilege, an honor, and a challenge to be in this position. Thank you for the opportunity to serve with you.
In my local ministry we started a “Contemplative” youth service that is led by some students feeling a call to ministry. In this service we are contemplating our way through the book of Mark. In the beginning of this book, Mark writes about the coming of John the Baptist (by the way, do you know what John the Baptist and Whiney the Pooh have in common? Their middle name.) and how John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus by preaching: “repent for the forgiveness of sins.” Jesus came and was baptized by John in the Jordan River; and this ushered Jesus into His public ministry. In Mark 1:14 it tell us that “after John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. ‘The time has come’, he said, ‘The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news.’”
As I spent time listening and contemplating this passage, I was really challenged by a few things:
First: How Jesus affirmed John the Baptist.
John had been put in prison. John thought he was doing right, and even sent some disciples to Jesus to see if he was the One. I love how Jesus affirmed John by repeating the same message that John had been preaching: “repent and believe the good news!” How cool would it be if Jesus came and repeated one of your sermons? How affirmed would you feel?
Second: How Jesus built on the ministry of John the Baptist.
Jesus didn’t begin to preach something totally different, but instead He spring-boarded His ministry off of the ministry of John the Baptist. Jesus didn’t re-invent ministry, no, in fact, the ministry that He came to bring to our world was built on the ministry of the Old Testament.
Ed-When was the last time you were affirmed? We each responded.
Ed-asks council to respond to his report:
Dennis-I believe that you are right on when it comes to the BP training, it needs to go back to being designed for the lay workers, volunteers, not full-time pro youth pastors.
Darin-Is this possible the way BP is designed?
Kenny-is this the place to have this conversation, I can go way in depth.
Ed-That’s fine for now, we can get into it later on at a set time.
Darin/Ed-My district events are a part of my local ministry.
Stacey-affirms Ed for all his hard work and dedication.
Discussion-on how ministry, structure, is changing.
Motion to accept-Dennis
Second-Darin
Motion passed unanimously.
Stacey and Lance-handed out thank you cards to all of the DP’s

Ed-Global Convention
Do any districts want to travel to another region for the convention? (No districts plan on attending)
This coming NYI convention on each district will decide delegates for the global convention.
Ed-We could take an offering to help delegates attend the global convention. Maybe take the offering at RME in 2008. If each region could raise money to help them attend it would be awesome!
Motion made by Dennis to take an offering at the 2008 & 2009 RME to help delegates attend the global convention. MPC
Ed-ask if we can designate which region the offering money will go to?

Tim Brewer-proposal for student leadership seminar
Proposal:
Northwest Regional Youth Leadership Summit
NorthwestNazareneUniversity
Summer 2008
(This is just a draft – you can fix what you want – MP)
Proposal
––Hold a regional, week long, leadership summit for the youth of the Northwest Region in the summer of 2008 at NorthwestNazareneUniversity
Purpose
--To make fully devoted followers of Christ of our senior high youth on the NW Region through a week of intensive training
Several years ago, a small group of youth pastor friends got together at a summer camp and started brainstorming over how they could better equip their youth for the Kingdom of God. They knew that summer camp was a great tool for spiritual transformation, mission trips were opportunities for service and NYC was another outstanding venue for heart change and motivation, but something was still lacking - how do we get these on fire, motivated teens equipped to make a impact in their communities and youth groups? They determined that a youth training event was needed.
The vision that was birthed was for a week long leadership camp that would train teens in needed discipleship and leadership principles. Because of busy schedules and various other reasons, this vision never came to fruition. But, the vision was also never lost.
Plan
– The intensive training for our youth would include, but is not limited to the
following sessions:
--One to two days of prayer – modeled after International Renewal Ministries prayer summits – How to connect with your faith
--Apologetics – How to defend your faith
--Evangelism – How to share your faith
--Christian ethics – How to live your faith
--Finding your spiritual gifts and talents – How to use your faith
--Leadership training – How to model your faith
--Strategic planning with youth groups and youth pastors/leaders
- oHow to design a purpose, vision, core values and strategy for your youth group
- oHow to recruit and train volunteers
- oCalendar planning
- oLong range planning
--Sessions on spiritual formation as recommended by the NW Regional Council
Pros
--This event would give another opportunity for training and spiritual transformation for our youth outside of camp, NYC and mission trips
--Small churches, without youth pastor’s, would get much needed training for their youth
--This event would give a big boost of momentum for youth groups heading into Fall
--The cream of youth leadership would rise to the top to impact the local church
--These “youth” leaders would set the positive tone for their youth groups
--Strategy sessions would give a positive structure to current youth ministries
--Sessions would be lead by experienced youth leaders
--More students would be exposed to NNU
Possible Problems
--This event would be “one more thing” for already busy calendars
--Small churches would have difficulty getting their youth to such an event
--Some may think that “former” youth pastors will be out of touch with current youth culture
