FRAMEWORK JOB DESCRIPTION:

HEAD OF YEAR

JOB TITLE:HEAD OF YEAR

GRADE:Band 8, Points 22-25depending upon qualifications and

experience.

RESPONSIBLE TO:Assistant Headteacher (Behaviour & Safety)

JOB PURPOSE:To support learning through the use of data, strategic intervention and monitoring in order to maximise student attainment. To provide pastoral support and guidance to students in order to ensure they attend school regularly, behave appropriately and achieve their academic potential.

MAIN TASKS

Regular duties;

  • To liaise with Assistant Head, Behaviour & Safety in all matters pertaining to the attendance, behaviour and welfare of students.
  • To liaise and meet with parents and agencies in promoting the attendance, good behaviour, welfare, development and attainment of students. On occasions, this will involve acting as ‘case manager’ for the student in partnership with outside agencies and also the writing of reports.
  • To conduct investigations, take statements and report results to a senior manager for action.
  • To apply sanctions consistent with the school’s behaviour policy up to and including a C5.
  • To analyse data from Praising Stars© every half term, complete and report to SLT and apply this in improving standards through a planned system of intervention strategies.
  • To advise, guide and support students with general learning, welfare and behavioural issues.
  • To contribute to the ECM agenda and Children’s Plan through planning and delivery of weekly assemblies, in consultation with the AHT for Behaviour & Safety.
  • To contribute to weekly HOY meetings
  • To perform daily supervisory duties during, Mentor periods and lunch times.
  • To personalise individual student learning and monitor their effectiveness.This may involve the production of a formal education plan that is disseminated to relevant staff.
  • To supervise “lates” detentions after school.
  • To contribute to the secure and confidential recording of incidents.
  • To attend staff briefings.
  • To lead a tutor meeting once per half term.
  • To cover for absent teachers when required.
  • To cover for an absent HOY or the Consequences’ Gatekeeper when required
  • To contribute to Enrichment or Intervention sessions as required after school.
  • To supervise students prior to examinations.
  • To contribute to specified events dictated by curricular needs (e.g. KS4 Options process)
  • To participate in Parents’ Evenings giving key guidance to individuals in need of specific support.
  • Working closely with the Impact Centre Manager, the SENCO and the Assistant Head Behaviour & Safety on Intervention strategies, targeting students for intervention: ie coursework completion, and other issues which may present a barrier to learning.
  • To utilise the SIMS system in order to track and intervene with serial internal truants, or students who are consistently late to lessons
  • To liaise with parents and the ESW regarding attendance issues. This includes making home visits to difficult to engage students and parents as required.
  • Attend PSPs when necessary.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality in all areas of work.
  • Any other duties, relevant to the post, which may from time to time

be required.

SAFEGUARDING & PROMOTING THE WELFARE OF STUDENTS

Working with the Designated Child Protection Person the post holder will:

  • Identify and record any child protection concerns. This could include processing referrals, actioning initial assessments and organizing meetings with parents.
  • Contribute information as required for Common Assessment or Multi-Agency meetings.
  • Action relevant aspects of CP plans under the direction of the DCPP.
  • Act at all times in line with the school’s Child Protection procedures.
  • Accompany children to appointments such as dentists where parents are unable/ unwilling to go if required.
