President’s Message

We are completing another Chapter year in May – the time flies when you are having fun! This month is your last chance to make it to a PDM until August. Come out and enjoy a meal, make a new friend and learn something new about problem solving from our speaker.

Make your plans now to include some continuous improvement activities over the next months while our Chapter isn’t holding a PDM:

·Attend TEDx-Hickory in May

·Start that book that has been sitting on your desk (and finish it)

·Attend a seminar

·Watch YouTube videos (Arizona State University has some good ones on Supply Chain)

·Take time to reflect and then make a plan for yourself and your business.

Please reach out to me if I can help you or if I can provide information about our Chapter. Mike Carpenter, President

April Program

The Foothills APICS Chapter will hold a dinner meeting and educational opportunity Thursday May 8, 6PM, at the Catawba Country Club. The guest speaker, Fadi Rahal, will share his ideas on Problem Solving Techniques.

Mr. Rahal earned his BS and ME in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a certified Six-Sigma Master Black Belt and certified Apollo Root Cause Analysis Master Instructor. He spent 14 years at GE before starting his own company - Effective Problem Solving LLC.

New Board Officials Elected

The annual Foothills Board of Directors election was held at the April PDM on the 10th. On behalf of the Nominating Committee, Bill Phillips and Debbie Boyle, we would like to present the newly elected board as shown below. The program year begins in July 2014 and extends through June 2015. We are excited about the leadership selected by the Foothills membership and welcome all new board officials to the team. In addition, some current board members will be taking on new responsibilities in the coming year. We applaud them for their willingness to accept these new challenges. We look forward to a productive and prosperous year with APICS!

Supply Chain Major at ASU

Minor to Major! In response to a global increase in demand for Supply Chain Management (SCM) skills, Appalachian State University’s Computer Information Systems (CIS) Department has a team of faculty working to create a new undergraduate major in SCM. The CIS Department began its SCM initiative three years ago by developing an SCM Minor, which has enjoyed great success, doubling enrollments each year to its current size of 155 students.

The faculty team, with invaluable assistance from its industry advisory board, is now working on expanding the curriculum to include courses in SCM fundamentals, strategic sourcing & global procurement, global logistics, six sigma, sales & operations planning, and supply chain information technology, along with a host of electives. The new SCM Major has received strong support from ASU University Leadership, and is expected to be put forth for approval by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors next year, with a possible launch date of Fall 2015.

Supply Chain Council to Merge with APICS

We are very pleased to share with you that the boards of directors of both APICS and Supply Chain Council have approved an agreement under which Supply Chain Council (SCC) will merge with APICS upon ratification by SCC member vote. The APICS Board vote was conducted at the meeting on April 25. We expect the transaction to be complete in mid-July. The Channel Partner Services team will host a webinar on Wednesday, April 30 at 11:00 a.m. CT, to discuss this exciting news with our North American Chapter leaders. The merger unites two industry leaders with complementary offerings to create the premier global provider of supply chain research, education and certification programs. Together, SCC and APICS offer a single-source solution for individuals and corporations looking to evaluate and improve supply chain performance.
