Climate change, Nutrition and Health

Contest introduction

The UNSCN Secretariat, in collaboration and with the financial support of the WHO Public Health and Environmental Department (PHE) is inviting youth from all over the world to react, by providing pictures, on the interconnection between climate change, nutrition and health. Knowledge about these linkages, representing one of the biggest environmental and human concerns worldwide, needs to disseminate.

The relationship between climate change, nutrition and health is a give-and-take interaction. It is clear that climate change is having and will continue to have severe consequences for nutrition security. However, a lot of doubts remain when it comes to predict climate change. It is then a challenge to understand how climate variations will affect nutrition security worldwide and therefore to implement concrete adaptation and mitigation measures. Moreover, while climate change affects food systems and activities, which in turn affects food security and the nutritional value of food, food systems can also worsen climate change. Food systems are indeed acknowledged to contribute to 19%–29% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

Citizens of the world are not only invited but encouraged to take part in efforts to mitigate climate change. The fight against climate change and its effects is a shared responsibility among all people. Nevertheless, the linkages between climate change, nutrition and health and the impact of these issues on humankind are not well known and need to be further addressed.

A lack of understanding often results in a lack of concern thus creating an urgent need to promote public awareness about the links between climate change, nutrition and health.

One effective way to accomplish this is to raise concern among young people. A complementary way is to use the power of photographs and the impact of pictures.

To promote public awareness on the link between climate change, nutrition and health, the UNSCN, with the special support of WHO and FAO, launched the campaign “Your FOOD, Your HEALTH, Your FUTURE” on 9 September 2013. One component being a worldwide photo contest dedicated to young people from 18 to 25 years old from all over the world. The campaign goal is to give youth the opportunity to raise their voice during an international event dedicated to Nutrition and Sustainability gathering recognized world experts and government officials.

Contest objectives

“Your FOOD, Your HEALTH, Your FUTURE” seeks to help draw youth attention to the challenge of climate change, and the need for both global and local action to address this issue, to protect our own future, as well as that of generations to come. Specifically, it will:

  4. Use the photos generated by the younger generation to show their engagement and voice their concern on what the future priorities should be considering health, nutrition and climate change during the Nutrition and Sustainability Seminar, to be held at FAO headquarters, Rome on November 12th. These pictures will be turned into a short video which will be presented by two young representatives from Malawi having proven effective commitment towards building sustainable food systems in their country.
  5. Produce a video showcasing experts reacting to the concerns raised in the pictures generated by young people.
