Fossils and Earth’s History Week

Monday (8)

Standard: MS-ESS1-4 : Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6 billion year old history.

Learning Target – I can construct a scale model of the Earth’s 4.6 billion year history.

Learning Target

LT-5 I can apply geologic principles to rock strata diagrams to determine the relative ages of rocks.

Students will:

·  Complete Investigation 18B

·  Begin Relative Dating Worksheet in which they will color the different sedimentary rock layers and will then apply geologic principles to put the layers in order.

·  Students will also complete a Fossils Puzzle and a dinosaur track activity.

Tuesday (9)

MS-ESS1-4 : Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6 billion year old history.

Learning Target – I can construct a scale model of the Earth’s 4.6 billion year history.

LT-5 I can apply geologic principles to rock strata diagrams to determine the relative ages of rocks.

Students will

·  Get their Fossils and EH LT 3 & 4 Quiz papers back.

·  Turn in their Lake Wilford Scientific Explanation papers.

·  Review LT 3 & 4 Quiz Questions.

·  Begin making a foldable of the six basic geologic principles.

Wednesday (10)

Standard: MS-ESS1-4 : Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6 billion year old history.

LT-5 I can apply geologic principles to rock strata diagrams to determine the relative ages of rocks.

Students will

·  Complete their geologic principle foldable

·  Students will use their foldables to apply the principles to rock sequences.

·  Students will work with a partner to sequence events and check answers.

Assessment: Students will take an exit quiz over applying the six basic geologic principles.

Differentiation: NA

Thursday (11)

Standard: MS-ESS1-4 : Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6 billion year old history.

Learning Target – I can construct a scale model of the Earth’s 4.6 billion year history.

Students will:

·  Review geologic principles with vocab. Card matching game

·  Work with a partner to correlate rock structures

·  Defend their thinking to their table group

·  Share their ideas with the class

·  Argue to reach a consensus

·  Take a clicker quiz to review the 6 geologic principles

Friday (12)

Standard: MS-ESS1-4 : Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6 billion year old history.

Learning Target – LT-6 I can identify and use index fossils to find the relative age of rock layers.

Students will compare rocks from the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion Canyon. Students will look for common index fossils and will use them to find the relative ages of rocks.
