Cross curricular links: Art, D&T, History, ScienceThe Activities
· Can you find…? [Main features of a church e.g. font, altar, pulpit, lectern] Can you match them to your plan of the church?· Can you find the Bible? Is there more than one? Can you find any other books? What are they? Where are they?
· Choose a stained glass window and describe what you can see, e.g. people, objects, colours, patterns.
· What do you think is happening in the picture? Can you identify the characters/story?
[A more detailed activity about stained glass windows can be found elsewhere in the Resource Pack]
· Look at the materials in the church. Can you find…? Objects made from wood, glass, metal, fabric, etc. Which material is used the most? Why do you think some of these materials were chosen? Can you find any evidence of ‘wear and tear’?
· How many different images of animals can you find (both 2-D and 3-D)? Which animals seem to feature the most often? Can you guess why? Do you know any Biblical verses about these animals
· Look at the Remembrance Board. Can you find 2 names the same? Any names you recognise? (especially in a local church). Are there any dates on the board? How far back do the dates go? Why do you think the board is there?
· Outside the Church:
Have a look at some of the gravestones, or plaques on the outside walls. Are there any names you recognise? Look at the birth and death dates. How do they vary?
Look above the church door. Sometimes there are names there too.
Try to find out when the church was built. If the Church is older than 55 years, work out who was King or Queen of England at the time.
