Read this study guide carefully. The piece of work you produce will count towards your final GCSE grade.

TASK ONE

Read at least two of the resource sheets provided about the issue. If you are aiming for a grade ‘C’ or above you are advised to read three or four articles, and you may choose to do some extra research as well.

In each article

  • Identify facts and opinions.
  • Make notes listing at least the five key points that you consider to be most important in each article.
  • Think about the bias in each article
  • Whose point of view is it putting across?
  • Which ‘side’ of the argument does it represent?
  • What is your evidence for this?

TASK TWO

Using the following website as a starting point, research Coca-Cola’s view on the issue.

viewpoints_india_recommendations_response.html

  • What are the facts?
  • What are the opinions?
  • Is this article biased? Why or why not?

TASK THREE

You have been asked to write a report of between 500 and 750 words about the argument over Coca-Cola in India. If you are aiming for a Grade ‘C’ or above you should write the report in your own layout. If you are aiming for grade ‘G’ to ‘E’ you may prefer to use the writing frame provided.

In your report you should aim to present the different ‘sides’ of the argument, the different views, and the evidence for those views. You should also describe and explain how the views may be biased.

The following questions will help you to write your report – you may have to think carefully to answer some of the questions.

  • Why did Coca-Cola build a factory in India?
  • How has the area benefited from the Coca-Cola factory being in the area?
  • What are the issues (problems) that have arisen as a result of the factory?
  • Present the two sides of the argument – how and why might each side be biased?
  • What solutions might there be to the problems? How might these affect the area in the short term? What about the long-term future?
  • What do YOU think about the issue and why?
