Doddington and Whisby lie approximately 6 miles west of the City of Lincoln with fine views of the Cathedral. There are a variety of facilities, including schools, pubs, places to eat, nature reserves, shops, pharmacies, doctors, vets, cash points, in the neighbouring villages of Saxilby, Skellingthorpe, Thorpe-on-the-Hill, Eagle and Harby. All of these villages are within a 5 mile radius of Doddington. There is a limited bus service between Lincoln/Skellingthorpe (Bus no. 29). Bus No 48 runs through Whisby/Thorpe-on-the-Hill/Eagle/Witham St Hugh’s. Timetables can be obtained from Lincoln City Bus Station.
There has been a settlement of some kind at Doddington at least since Roman times, and numerous small artefacts have been found from that era at sites in the surrounding fields near The Hall dating back 4000 years to the Neolithic period. The village is also mentioned in the Domesday Book as a community with woods, pasture, arable land and a church. There are some signs that the foundations of the present church contain Norman remains.
Whisby also has a long history. At one time it was more of a settlement with a chapel of rest and bakery. Nearby Whisby Garden Centre with its animal park is well worth visiting, especially for children. Whisby Nature Park is excellent for wildlife and walking and is also close by. /
