I.ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Department of Community Medicine

Following Postgraduate Orientation lectures were delivered by Mr.T.C.Sharma, Statistician cum Lecturer during the month of June 2010: -

Department of Paediatrics

a)A Seminar on the topic “Role of Cephalosporins in Children” was organized in the department on 4th June 2010. Dr.Tulika & Dr.Saniya, both interns, gave a detailed overview on the topic. Dr.Ravinder Kumar Gupta, Associate Professor moderated the Seminar.

b)There was a screening of scientific film in the department on the topic “Precautions Being Taken by the Paramedical staff in Nursery and Maternity Ward” on 9th June 2010. Dr.Kamlesh Manhas, Professor & HOD Gynae & Obst. also attended this scientific activity alongwith the staff.

c)Dr.Ravinder Kumar Gupta, Associate Professor was invited to attend 1st Influenza Foundation of India Conference (IFICON) at the Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi on 11th12th June 2010. He was the only doctor from J&K to attend this scientific activity. International experts from New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam and India also took part in this gathering. Dr.Ravinder Kumar Gupta had a chance to interact with these experts and discussed various clinical presentations of patients of Influenza.

Department of Medicine

A Seminar on “Adult Vaccination” was organized in the department of Medicine for UG and PG students on 11th June 2010. Before the seminar, the Head of department Dr.R.P.Kudyar welcomed the new Postgraduate students and apprised them about the teaching curriculum as also the functioning of the department.

Department of Paediatrics

(a)Publication of article

An original article “Etiological Factors of Malnutrition in Migrant Labor Population” by Dr.Ravinder K. Gupta, Assoiate Professor was published in Indian Journal of Maternal and Child Health, volume 12, April – June 2010. This journal is indexed in Indian Science abstracts and POPLINE.

(b)Conduct of CMEs : Following CMEs were conducted in the Demonstration room of the Paediatrics OPD: -

  1. On 26th June 2010, Dr.Ravinder K. Gupta, Associate Professor gave a detailed overview on the topic “The Role of DHA in Growing Children”. This scientific activity was also attended by Dr.Kamlesh Manhas, Professor & HOD Obst. & Gynae. alongwith her staff members.
  1. There was a seminar on the topic “Topical Antibacterials” on 30th June 2010. Dr.Prenika Shangloo, Jr. Resident was the speaker on this occasion. Dr.Ravinder K. Gupta acted as moderator. Dr.Sanjay Gupta, Professor & HOD Dermatology alongwith his staff members also attended this scientific activity. Dr.Sanjay Gupta clarified many doubts regarding the application of topical antiseptic ointments. Dr.Kumkum Sharma, Professor Blood Bank also attended this activity.
  1. Dr.Yeeshu Singh, Senior Resident spoke on the topic “Management of Bronchial Asthma in Children” on 7th July 2010. Dr.Sanjeev Narang, Lecturer Deptt. of Pulmonary Medicine was invited to give his expert opinion on this topic.

(c)Dr.D.B.Sharma, Professor & HOD alongwith Dr.Ravinder K Gupta, Dr.D.R.Sarmal, Dr.Neera Bhargava and Dr.Yeeshu Singh attended a CME on the topic “An Approach to Child with Chronic Liver Disease” organized by IAP Jammu at KC Residency on 28th June 2010. Dr.B.R.Thapa, noted Pediatric Gastroenterologist from PGI Chandigarh was the guest speaker on this occasion.

II. HEALTH CARE PROGRAMMES

(a)Free Medical Camps

(i) 170th Free Eye, Medicine and Paediatric Camp was organized by ASCOMS & Hospital at Village Kotla, Tehsil Bishnah on 5th June 2010. Dr. Dinesh Malhotra, Associate Professor & Dr. Priyanka Sodani, Senior Resident examined 53 eye patients, Dr. Himanshu Sharma, Junior Resident from Medicine Deptt. examined 42 patients and Dr.Meenakshi Manhas, Junior Resident from Paediatrics examined 24 children. Free medicines were also distributed to the needy.

15 patients were also booked for free cataract operation and Intraocular implantation with small incision surgery at ASCOMSHospital.

(ii)171st Free Eye, Medicine and Paediatric Camp was organized by ASCOMS & Hospital at Gurha Slathian, Distt. Samba on 12th June 2010. In the camp 60 eye patients were examined by Dr.Renu Hashia, Associate Professor & Dr.Anjali Manhas, Junior Resident. Dr.Sanjay Bhat, Senior Resident Medicine Deptt. examined 10 patients and Dr.Poonam, Junior Resident Paediatrics Deptt examined 3 patients. Free medicines were also distributed to the needy.

15 patients were also booked for free cataract operation and Intraocular implantation with small incision surgery at ASCOMSHospital.

(b)Service Activities

i)Specialty clinics at UTHC Chatha

During the month of June 2010, Specialty clinics at UTHC Chatha were held by the departments of Paediatrics, E.N.T., Obst. & Gynae., Medicine, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Skin, Psychiatry and Surgery in which 133 patients were examined and 9 patients referred to different specialties for further checkup/treatment at ASCOMSHospital, Sidhra

III. CELEBRATION OF WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY

ASCOMS & Hospital celebrated World Blood Donor Day on 14th June 2010 by organizing two voluntary blood donation camps. The first camp was by Sant Nirankari Mission under the blessings of Jag Mohan Choudhary, Zonal Incharge J&K and second camp was by Intern Doctors of ASCOMS. J&K AIDS Prevention and Control Society sponsored both these camps. On this occasion Dr.A.Kumar, Director Principal welcomed and thanked the young voluntary blood donors who volunteered for this humanitarian gesture.

Dr.Kumkum Sharma, Prof & Head Transfusion Medicine informed the donors that World Donor Day takes place on 14th June each year and the focus of World Blood Donor Day 2010 was on young donors with the Slogan “New Blood for the World”. She said that the need for the blood is increasing in all parts of the world and young people can make an important contribution by donating blood and by recruiting other young people to become donors. The global celebration on 14th June has a particular significance since it happens to be the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, Nobel Prize Winner who discovered ABO blood group system. This day also provides a unique opportunity to thank voluntary blood donors who have already donated blood to save the lives of the people whom they have never met and who donate their blood freely and without any reward. Dr.Kumkum informed that today 57 countries have achieved 100 per cent voluntary blood donation, up from 39 in 2002 and we hope India would soon be a member of this group.

Prof.R.N.Dubey, HOD Community Medicine, Dr.Bhavana and Paramedical staff of Blood Bank actively participated in the camps.

IV.FREE TREATMENT TO PATIENTS BELONGING TO ECONOMICALLY WEAKER SECTIONS

During the period from 1stJune to 30th June 2010, 46 patients were admitted and given free treatment in accordance with the norms prescribed by J&K Govt.
