New Tech High Summer Reading 2017-2018

The New Tech High English Department believes that reading should be encouraged as a lifelong habit. The summer reading list balances readings that will directly engage learners in upcoming projects with independent reading selections.

Rookies / English I:
  1. The Element by Ken Robinson
  2. Read one self-selected book from this list.

Sophomores / English II:
Learners must read at least one self-selected fiction and non-fiction book over the summer (2 total).
1. The Printz Award List is a great place to find popular titles of award-winning young adult novels from past years. Click on previous years to see winners and finalists from each year.
2. The YALSA Nonfiction Award List is a good place to look for award-winning young adult nonfiction. Here are some other suggestions:
- The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore
- Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
- Columbine by Dave Cullen
- In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
- A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard
- A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah
- Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

  2. Read one self-selected novel. You may want to select a novel from this list or select a novel of similar literary merit. (Note: Learners will have linked list sent via email)

TWU Dual-Credit/English IV: Read one nonfiction book from the following selections:
  • Nature: A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard
  • People: Sex on the Moon by Ben Mezrich, Moneyballby Michael Lewis
  • Science: A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson, The Day We Found the Universe by Marcia Bartusiak
  • Society: Salvation on Sand Mountain by Dennis Covington, Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Einreich
