LICKING COUNTY OHC

MAY NEWSLETTER

Hello Everyone!

Hope everyone is enjoying the early summer weather and getting some riding in! If you are like me, I’m sure you have had plenty of time “riding” the lawnmower, also! It’s just not right to have to mow grass this early.

I want to pass along a reminder, that the Licking County OHC Chapter voted to support/sponsor five youths for this year’s Youth Campouts this coming summer. As of the writing of this article, there has been no one who has expressed an interest. If you know of a youth that is a LCOHC Member, that would be interested in going to one of the campouts, please let me know! All of the information and the application forms are on the State OHC website, (). Notify me and complete the application process and the chapter will reimburse the fee. If we do not get any takers within our chapter, the money will be donated to the OHC Youth program to support a youth elsewhere that would like to attend but does not have the funds. If I do not have anyone sign up by the next meeting, the funds will be forwarded, at that time to Jackie Romaker, Youth Chairperson, to distribute.

I would also like to pass along information of our upcoming event at our next meeting. The Licking County OHC Chapter will be having another Safety Training event presented by Officer Regina Shoopman of the Ohio State University Mounted Patrol along with her husband, John, of the Columbus Police Mounted Patrol. I have also extended this invitation to Chapter Members of Knox, Muskingum and Perry Counties to participate. We are having it at our next meeting, May 22nd at the Infirmary Mound Park of the Licking Park District in the horse parking area at 6pm. The presentation this time will be “with your horse”, for hands on training. Please be there, tacked up and ready to start at 6pm. Regina is planning on covering the following topics/techniques:

Group warm up- riding near other horses and in groups- spacing, safety

Flexing your horse and "emergency" stops- essential skill

Mounted self-defense- refresh instructionsand practice techniques we talked about last time

Obstacles on the trail- techniques for conquering and moving beyond

Personal and Improvised weapons-

Scenario- chance to practice skills- if we have time

If you do not want to bring a horse, she will need some help with ground support, if you would like to volunteer or just come and enjoy the evening with fellow members and learn some safety techniques. We will also have a pot luck carry in for this meeting, at 530pm, if you care to bring something and join us.

If you could just let me know if you intend on attending, so I have an idea of how many to expect. This sounds like a fun evening of learning as Regina & John both are experts in their fields and did a great job at last year’s presentation. *This is limited to OHC members for insurance purposes.

Please RSVP to me before May 18th(). I hope to see a great turnout for this event! We had a lot of good feedback from last year’s presentation.

Well, until next time! Be Safe!

Trail Maintenance Information

All of the trail maintenance worker bees have been busy so far this year! First was at Blue Rock on March 25th to help Muskingum County OHC, then at AEP McConnellsville on April 1st to help Morgan County OHC. Next we had our own work day at Dillon State Park on April 15th. We had a really great turn out for this work day. We had sixteen workers, from Licking, Muskingum and Morgan counties, helping out. It was a beautiful day to be out. Then some of us went to Hocking State Forest on April 22nd to help Fairfield County OHC.

We are in the plan-making stage to do our last required project of the year for the Licking Park District. We are working out the details for a project at Taft Reserve to correct the wet area towards the rear of the park. At the time of the writing of this note, Craig Santee and Karen McCabe, were meeting with Tami from the park, to determine what needed to be done. We will try to get a work day scheduled sometime in May, if possible, and if the weather cooperates. Information will be sent out via the Newsgroup and will be listed on the webpage at lickingcountyohc.org, so stay tuned! I know the LPD horse trails get a lot of use by our members, so this is your chance to give something back if you ride at the parks frequently. None of the work is that hard, we can find something to fit everyone’s abilities, so please consider helping out.

Thanks,

Craig Santee
