Minutes for February 18, 2016 SAC/SAF Meeting

I. Welcome

5:34 – Ms. Duperval calls the meeting to order and recites the pledge

5:34 – Introduction of attendees

5:35 – Review of minutes from the January meeting

II. Principal’s Report: Dr. Angel Almanzar

5:38 – Dr. Almanzar share that the school’s letter grade is officially a “C”

5:38 – The state grading policy: (a) schools receive points from 0-100 based on FSA Reading/Writing sores; (b) If students increase in points, there are learning gains; (c) The lowest 20% of students reading at level 1 or 2; (d) 300 points in reading and math; (e) Biology; (f) Graduation 91%; (g) Acceleration success points; (h) All columns = 1000 points; (i) Schools graded from A-F

5:40 – One program we are using to measure student learning is Achieve3000. The area that needs the most improvement is in vocabulary, an area that affects all content areas; the goal is an improvement from 63% to 80% improvement by April

5:42 – Dr. Almanzar shares the district report on discipline, specifically suspensions and attendance

5:45 – Dr. Almanzar reviews the testing calendar prepared by Ms. Duperval. The writing test will begin on Feb 29th for 9th grade, March 1st for 10th grade, and March 2nd ESE and ELL

5:47 – Robert (a student) ask about Super Testing days. Ms. Duperval explains that on Super Testing days, all schools will be testing, students will come to complete the particular tests for the day

5:49 – Dr. Almanzar mentions that the seniors are doing well. Students who have not passed the reading test are still taking the ACT. We are down to 83 students that still have to pass the ACT. They still have several opportunities, including the ACT June 11th and SAT on June 4th. We are at about the same place we were in last year. We are expected to do the same or better than last year in terms of graduation rate.

5:51 – Last week we had three phone calls regarding a bomb threat. This happened again on Thursday and Friday. We evacuated, called the school police, and media relations search the school, and nothing was found. Students were well behaved. The person has not yet been found.

5:52 – Yesterday, we had an unexpected visit from the school board police. The school was locked down, and we did well, overall. There will be a debriefing with the faculty during the faculty meeting next week.

5:58 – Mr. Williams suggest training the substitute teachers on lockdown procedures.

5:58 – Dr. Almanzar responds that Ms. Mausby is putting together an emergency packet for substitute teachers.

5:59 – The basketball team is doing well this year, although we lost against Dillard.

6:00 – The Black History show is on February 29th from 1:00-2:30. This year, the focus is on literacy. Students will be doing poetry, speeches, etc.

III. ESE presentation by Sandy Oscar

6:01 – We currently have a little over 200 ESE students. Each has an (Individualized Education Plan) IEP, which outlines their present level of performance (PLP) and list reading, math, and/or functioning goals

6:02 – We have the largest SVE program (56 students), expected to increase next year. We have 5 SVE (self-contained) classrooms

6:03 – Many of our past ESE students are currently working at Goodwill

6:05 – Students can remain in the SVE program until age 22.

6:05 – An ESE student’s IEP allows for accommodations in the general education classroom extra time, reduced assignments, copies of notes, color-coded key words, etc.

6:08 – The “R” Word Awareness month is coming up, and Ms. Oscar will be going over that with her teachers next week.

6:09 – Assessment will be on the computer this year.

6:11 – All ESE students, except language impairment student, receive accommodations.

IV: Behavior Plan Presentation by Mr. Farr

6:14 – Mr. Farr discusses what to do when discipline prevents students from learning. To address this, the school board came up with the school-wide positive behavior plan. We want to encourage/reward good behavior.

6:16 – All schools in the district will come up with lesson plans that teachers will incorporate in the classroom to address discipline and prevent distractions in the class

6:17 – If students are encouraged to change their behavior, they will be in class more and the achievement level will increase.

6:18 – We currently need a SAC representative to be on the PBP committee. We have 6 committee members, which includes a school representative, social worker, ESE specialist, guidance member, BTU representative, teacher representative, and administrator.

6:21 – Mr. Williams volunteers to be a SAC representative

6:23 – The Positive Behavioral Plan will be a part of the School Improvement Plan (SIP)

6:24 – Mr. Farr mentions that SAC will view a video presentation on Bullying. The faculty has already been trained.

6:25 – Mr. Farr discusses what to do when your child is being bullied. He discusses the main points in the film.
