International Conference

Criminal Justice Cooperation: Comparing European, United States’, Asia-Pacific and Australian approaches

Hosted by the Law Faculty of the University of Canberra (UC) in association with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security (CEPS)

The conference is further supported by the Law Council of Australia and the ANU Centre of European Studies.

Conference Aims

This conference will bring together a wide range of speakers drawn from experts in the fields of criminal justice and police cooperation from Europe, the United States, the Asia-Pacific Region and Australia. It will explore the national, regional and international challenges to criminal justice cooperation and aim at providing solutions through comparative perspective.

As criminal justice cooperation has become increasingly important in the 20th century with the growth of sophisticated organised crime, the advancements in technology and the mobility of offenders, new solutions need to be found to counter different and more sophisticated types of crime. At the same time the cooperation of the police, the military and aid organisations is required in particular in the Asia-Pacific Region and countries in the European neighbourhood which creates complex problems of cooperation between different actors and deploying and receiving countries. Justice cooperation still struggles with the differences in standards of procedural provisions all over the world. By approaching these issues from a comparative perspective this conference will give a deeper insight into the different national, regional and international systems and further the understanding of those systems which is crucial to promote cooperation between and within them. This approach of learning from other systems aims at the improvement of cooperation between national systems with a view to protecting human rights while maintaining high standards of security.
