** ATTENTION PARENTS AND STUDENTS **

Attached is the syllabus for Touch System Data Entry(a/k/a Keyboarding), describing the policies for grading, tutoring, absences, late work, and extra credit work. It also contains informationabout student expectationsin the classroom, as well as guidelines for student computer usage.

Touch System Data Entry is a one-semester high school credit course. Upon successful completion, you will receive 0.5 high school credit.

Your final grade for the course is based on the average of the three six-weeks’ grades plus the semester final exam grade. Each of those four grades is worth 25% of the final grade.

The grade for this course will transfer to high school andbe included in your high school grade point average (GPA) calculation. The TSDE grade will not count towardyour high school class rank.

NOTE: AISD also has a non-credit course for Touch System Data Entry.

Fall 2017 Syllabus

OVERVIEW:

This course will cover touch system data entry (a/k/a ‘keyboarding’) with an emphasis on technique, accuracy, and speed. The course will also focus on the Microsoft Office programs Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Students will start by covering computer basics, using AISD Cloud-based applications,touch typing, and effective internet searches. After that, students will work on assignments that create, edit, and enhance assignmentsusing the Microsoft Office programs listed above.

MATERIALS:

You are expected to come to class prepared to work. Have a pencil or pen with you every day. Every student should have a pocket folder for class papers, unless you are using a binder system for all classes. In that case, have a section of your binder set up for Touch System Data Entry.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

There are threeexpectationswe will honor to maintain a peaceful and productive learning environment:

  • Be respectful: Listen quietly. Use polite and appropriate language. Raise your hand to speak.
  • Be focused: Be mentally present in the classroom and focused on the class work.
  • Practice integrity: Integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.

BEHAVIOR/DISCIPLINE:

Students are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate, business-like manner. Disruptions to classroom activities, roughhousing, verbal outbursts, inappropriate language, or damage to equipment will not be tolerated.

The first time a student violates a behavior expectation, he/she will receive a ‘redirect’ verbal warning. If the violation occurs again, a checkmark will be recorded, followed by an email home. A second checkmark will be followed by a phone call home. If a fourth violation occurs, the student will receive a referral to the office.

Each checkmark a student receives will result in a 25-point drop in the weekly progress grade.

NOTE: Physical altercations will result in an immediate referral, without warnings or checkmarks.

Checkmarks: On Fridays at the end of class, there will be a 20-minute free time session for students who have completed and turned in all work for that week. Students with incomplete assignments will use that time to finish work. Each time any student in the class earns a check mark, the class loses one minute from that 20-minute free time period.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

  1. GRADING: Some of the work we will be doing carries more grading weight than other work.
  • Unit Assignments, Presentations, Quizzes and Tests - 60% of overall grade
  • Classwork Assignments, Weekly Progress (including warm ups) - 40% of overall grade
  1. HOMEWORK: As a rule, homework is almost never assigned. You should be able to complete assignments during class time. If you do not complete a class assignment in class, it becomes homework. If you need extra time, please check with me about coming in during tutoring.
  2. LATE WORK: The late work grading policy will be the same as the standard late work grading policy set by GMS campus administration.
  3. FAILURES: Students can re-take tests and quizzesif the grade is lower than 70. The maximumpossible grade on the re-take is 70%. You may be required to completereview activities before you retake a test.
  4. EXTRA CREDIT WORK: I do not give extra credit work. If your grade is low because of missing work, turn in the missing work. If you are truly struggling with the material and failing the course, schedule a meeting with me during Excel and we will work together to develop a strategy for success.
  5. TUTORING: This course is for high school credit, so if you are failing,I can insist that you come in for tutoring during Excel. You can also ask me to stamp your agenda if you just want extra time to work on assignments.
  6. TARDIES: A tardy occurs when a student is not in his/her seat when the bell rings.

  1. ABSENCES: If you were assigned work and are absent the day it is due, it is due the day you return to class. It is your responsibility to check forassignments missed during an absence. If work was assigned during your absence, you have 3 days for each day absentto turn it in late, without penalty. If you miss a test or quiz, you must arrange to make it up some time inthe next three days during tutoring. If there are other extenuating circumstances, please discuss the situation with the me.
  2. CHEATING: This includes online collaboration, copying answers, allowing someone to copy your answers, plagiarism, using unauthorized sources on a test/quiz, or having someone else complete an assignment for you.

1st offense: You will be given an alternate assignment, plus your parents will be notified and you will be assigned detention. The alternate assignment will receive a maximum grade of a 70.

2nd offense: You will be given an alternate assignment, plus your parents will be notified and you will receive an office referral. The alternate assignment will receive a maximum grade of 70.

  1. BATHROOM/HALL PASSES: The five minutes of passing time between classes is your time to get materials and use the restroom. Leaving the classroom after the bell isallowedonly at the teacher’s discretion. Any student given permission to leave the classroom will sign out and back in on the Sign-Out Clipboard, noting the date, time, and destination.
  2. CLEAN UP: Students are responsible for cleaning up their work area. Any student not cleaning up after herself/himself will receive a checkmark against the daily class work grade.

Cleaning up includes pushing in your chair and leaving the workstationready for other classes.

Students who repeatedly violate this policy will receive clean-up detention during lunch.

  1. COMPUTER USAGE: The computer equipment is here for your learning. You will use it with care.
  1. Food, gum, and drinksare not permitted in the classroom. Water bottlesmust be puton the bookcase by the classroom entrance.
  2. The computers are school property, and as such, it is a violation of Austin ISD’s Acceptable Use Policy to customize features, change settings, or install additional software. Violation will result in a referral to the office, and parent notification by email.
  3. Do not change the backgrounds, screen resolution, brightness, etc. Do not pin objects/games to the desktop. Installing additional programs is strictly prohibited.
  4. INTERNET USE IS LIMITED TO RESEARCH AND OTHER CLASSWORK. Accessing games, e-mail, chat rooms, Google Chat/Hangout,video (outside of lessons), blogs and forums is not permitted. It is a violation of the Austin ISD Acceptable Use Policy. You will receive a referral to the office, and your parents notified.
  5. Your use of the computer workstation is being actively monitored. If you are using it for something other than class work (such as setting up accessories, playing games or doing puzzles, going to unauthorized web sites, browsing Google Images, or messaging), without explicit consent from the instructor, you will be remotely logged off the computer, given a writing assignment, and be assigned detention to complete your class work. Any further violations will result in a referral to the office.
  6. Use of your computer workstation is a privilege.If you abuse that privilege, you will to stop work for the day, receive a writing assignment, and be assigned lunch detention to finish your assignment. Any further instances of abuse of will result in a referral to the office.

9. ELECTRONIC DEVICES:

  • Cell phones are not required for any classroom activities. Cell phone use of any kind is not permitted.
  • If I see a phone out, even if it’sjust sitting on the desk, I will take it up.
  • There is a cell phone caddy at the front of the classroom. If you bring a phone into class, you must put it in the pocketwith the same number as your workstation number.
  • If there is down-time due to completing an assignment early, you may use a tablet, Nook, or iPad toread, with the teacher’s permission.You may not read on your phone.
  • Students found using personal electronic devices for any purpose other than what is explicitly permitted above, will have the device confiscated, in accordance with Austin ISD policy.
