General Summary:

To ensure Peace Baptist Church upkeep, cleanliness, and orderliness of all church buildings, grounds, and equipment. The full-time custodian is a vital part of the various programs of this church. He/She is responsible for making sure that rooms are set up, that the temperature is comfortable, and that necessary equipment is in place. This area of responsibility insures that those involved in the program can concentrate on the content and not be distracted by inadequately prepared facilities.

Essential Functions:

I.  Oversee the ongoing maintenance, upkeep and improvements for the properties owned by Peace Baptist Church

·  Acquire knowledge of program events by attending weekly staff meetings.

·  Set up assembly, classrooms, and worship areas for regular activities.

·  Open and close buildings for services, programs, events, weddings, funerals, and when outside vendors need to access the building.

·  Operate heating, cooling, and ventilating equipment on an agreed upon schedule to maintain comfortable temperatures.

·  Prepare baptism pool for use as directed and clean following use.

·  Move furniture and equipment and set up tables and chairs for events.

·  Assist when facilities are used for weddings and funerals

II.  Program Support: Many responsibilities of the full-time custodian do not relate directly to a specific program but help to undergird the total program and insure the smooth functioning of the church.

o  Open and close buildings daily as directed.

o  Empty garbage cans daily.

o  Sweep and mop hallways and fellowship hall floors as directed in the scope of service.

o  Buff, strip and wax all floors and clean baseboards as scheduled.

o  Clean carpeted floors

o  Wash walls and windows

o  Request cleaning and maintenance supplies and equipment as needed.

o  Maintain a neat and orderly supply and storage areas.

o  Recommend additional major maintenance and repair work as needed.

o  Collaborate with other ministry leaders to provide counsel on use of the facility and to manage the set-up and breakdown of rooms

o  Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedures.

o  Clean, dust and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; replace light bulbs and refill restroom dispensers to ensure adequate towels, toilet paper and soap.

o  Remove fingerprints and other marks and dirt from glass, light switches and door jambs and handles as necessary.

o  Change key locks when requested.

o  Assist or perform the setup of facilities for meetings, classes, conferences, concerts and events, etc.

o  Lock and unlock buildings, rooms, closets etc. as necessary for scheduled and unexpected events and activities. Re-lock same as these activities conclude.

o  Report any unauthorized occupants.

o  Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies.

o  Move and arrange furniture, tables, chairs, equipment, supplies and tools, etc. on an as needed basis to accommodate church functions and activities.

o  Will need sufficient physical strength to lift, carry and move furniture, equipment and supplies.

o  Wear appropriate clothing and use appropriate personal protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves, earplugs and respirators) including safe shoes that protect the whole foot.

Room Set Up & Tear Down:

o  The custodian will be responsible for setting up tables, chairs and other equipment required in advance of meetings at the church that are assigned to the custodian by church staff.

o  The custodian will likewise be responsible for clean-up and tear down following meetings and events that are assigned to the custodian.

o  Upon request, the custodian will provide tablecloth supplies for the tables if needed. It will be the responsibility of the custodian to prepare the church for all services.

Interior & Exterior Lighting: The Custodian will ensure appropriate lights are turned on for services and meetings and turned off at the conclusion of church services or events. This includes all common areas and restrooms.

o  The custodian will visually check and replace all burned out light bulbs and fluorescent tubes and will repair or coordinate repair for replacement of any switches, outlets, and fuses.

o  Fixtures should be cleaned whenever light bulbs are changed.

o  A quarterly check should be conducted on emergency lights and replacement of backup batteries completed as necessary.

Climate Control: The custodian will be responsible for appropriate climate control for all Church services, meetings and events in order to ensure comfort of guests.

o  Setting the timers on all thermostats when church/classrooms are not occupied.

Security: The Custodian shall check that all doors are unlocked and exit lights turned on before all services, and special events. He/she will ensure proper measures have been taken to lock up the church after each event and church service.

o  The doors and windows should be locked and lights turned off after the service or event is completed.

Restrooms: Towels, tissue, and soap supplies will be checked on a regular basis, and adequate supplies maintained and supplied as needed.

o  Deodorant cakes will be kept in all urinals, and plumbing fixtures checked for proper operation.

o  All restrooms are to be checked before services, events or meetings and cleaned, maintained or repaired as required.

Interior Building Maintenance: The Custodian will visually inspect the building and complete minor painting, repairs, or adjustments as needed. Any major need identified by the custodian should be reported to the Senior Pastor for repair or replacement.

o  The Custodian shall have the carpeting cleaned as needed.

o  Ensure that an adequate supply of garbage bags and related goods are maintained and available for use.

Other Duties:

·  Assist with inventory control and security.

·  Safely operate all vehicles and other job related equipment.

·  Responsible for the use of safety devices and protective equipment in order to minimize the frequency and severity of work-related accidents.

·  Responsible for using safe practices and methods in the operation and supplies related to their job.

·  Responsible for correcting any conditions within the building or grounds that may be hazardous to employees, students, or staff assigned to the building and reporting same to the appropriate administrator.

Experience:

Pre-Employment Requirements:

A valid Georgia driver’s license...

A High School Diploma or equivalent

Must be able to comply with background check, including fingerprints

Meet all requirements of the physical examination administered by a medical service selected PBC

Must be free of communicable diseases and breathing impairments

A minimum of 12 months working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment.

The ability to use custodial supplies and equipment economically and efficiently

The ability to make minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs as needed.

The ability to and perform a variety of routine maintenance tasks.

Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of heating systems

Must be able to work independently and see and take initiative where needs are perceived.

Must have some flexibility in work schedule to accommodate church needs.

Physical Demands

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: distance driving within the State, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling. Mobility is required as the performance of monitoring duties generally require the ability to stand and walk up to 98% of time on the job and left up to 50 or more pounds.
