Role Overview:
The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific activities with other research staff; usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with experimental and observational work, and in this case, carrying out software development work.
This position represents an opportunity for a Software Engineer to join our team of researchers and software engineers, to work on systems and platforms that retrieve, analyse, integrate, and communicate information based on structured (semantic) as well as unstructured (free text) data. The skills required to perform in these roles are a combination of strong software engineering abilities along the modern development stack (storage, web services, web front-ends, mobile, cloud), the ability to comprehend academic research results and translate them into software systems, a good understanding of agile development processes, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with other team members and clients.
Some travel may be required, as well as interaction with external clients.
Duties and Key Result Areas:
·  Work with a team of researchers and software engineers in developing software to tackle issues in the retrieval, analysis, integration, and communication of information based on structured (semantic) and unstructured (free text) data sources.
·  Develop and maintain high quality software in accordance with industry best practice and organisational guidelines.
·  As required contribute to the management and administration of research IT systems, web sites and associated infrastructure.
·  Help build CSIRO’s research and engineering reputation for integrated and multi-disciplinary science in document computing.
·  Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
·  Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to carry out tasks under limited direction in support of scientific research.
·  Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives.
·  Adapt and/or develop original experimental methods/equipment/software/concepts/ ideas in support of existing and further research.
·  Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.
·  Other duties as directed.
Selection Criteria:

Pre-Requisites:
·  Education/Qualifications: A tertiary degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related area, and/or equivalent experience. Track record in implementing software systems.
Essential Criteria:
1.  Experience in agile development methods, use of issue tracking (e.g. JIRA), and code repositories (e.g. SVN, Git)
2.  Experience in modern programming languages such as Java, Python, JavaScript, C#
3.  Demonstrated experience in at least 2-3 of the following:
o  Data storage technologies such as SQL, RDF / SPARQL, Data warehouse / ETL, No-SQL
o  Backend technologies such as Web Application Frameworks, Web Application Server configuration / maintenance, Unix scripting, basic Linux / Windows OS maintenance
o  Frontend technologies such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Ajax, UI Design, D3
o  Modern Architectures such as web application stacks, distributed systems, RESTful web services, Cloud technologies
o  Configuration / maintenance of continuous build, test, and deploy systems
4.  The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out tasks autonomously in support of scientific research.
5.  Demonstrated ability & willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.
Desirable Criteria:
1.  Experience with IR technologies (e.g. SOLR, Lucene)
2.  Experience with semantic (web) technologies
3.  Experience with cloud APIs (e.g. AWS, OpenStack)
4.  Experience with developing mobile applications (iOS, Android)

·  Problem Solving: Proven ability to investigate underlying issues of complex and ill-defined problems and develop appropriate responses by adapting/creating and testing alternative solutions.
