Scór na nÓg on Thursday 12th November: The Kilkenny finals of Scór na nÓg (Under 17) will be held on Thursday 12th November at Langtons Set Theatre.

Each club is asked once again to enter teams on the night. There was an increase in participation rates last year and the onus is on clubs to once again fulfil their obligations to the cultural aspect of the GAA and enter teams.

There are eight events/disciplines in Scór that cover all aspects of Irish culture: Figure/Céilí Dancing, Solo Singing, Instrumental Music, Recitation/Scéalaíocht, Ballad Group, Novelty Act, Question Time and Set Dancing. The competition is divided into two age levels, Scór Na nÓg, for young people under 17 and Scór Sinsear, for those over 17.
Just like the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championships clubs taking part in Scór must first take part in a county championship. The winners go on to the provincial championship and then the All-Ireland Final. Anyone interested please contact our Club secretary Thomas Holden @ 0872886560 ASAP.

Results:

Well done to the U21’s who won the first round of the championship when they defeated Carrickshock by 1.15 to 1.11 in ideal conditions in Inistoige on Sunday afternoon. We made hard work of it at times but ran out comfortable winners. We now await the winners of Dunnamaggin & Tullogher Rosbercon which will be played this weekend. The semifinal will be on Saturday 14th November @ 2pm in Thomastown.

Minister Ann Phelan TD Officially Opens Abbey Hall and Youth Cafe

I have always been incredibly passionate about the Abbey Hall, not least because of its history but because of the many stories it holds. It has always been the heart of the community here in Graig and it was with a heavy heart that I used to look upon the hall in its dilapidated condition on a daily basis some years ago.

During its Heyday in the 1970s there was bingo every Sunday night with attendance of over 500 on a good night. Mass took place here while the Abbey was being restored, and weekly dances and discos occurred, which played a major role in the development of a community infrastructure through providing finance for local community organisations. During that period the Abbey hall was the primary mechanism in the raising of €1milion Pounds for the restoration of Duiske Abbey.
After very tough negotiations and following discussion with the committee, I secured the purchase of the hall for the Community at a cost of €14,000. Following this we formed a limited company known as the Graignamanagh Hall Limited.
I want to thank the members of the committee individually for all their hard work and their dedication because I think it’s important that the people of Graignamanagh know who was behind the restoration and delivery of the Abbey Hall back to the community. I would like to thank Tom McDonald, Ward Kinsella, Liam Ryan, Mary Meaney, Francis Sheehy, Brigid Lyng, Adrian Hayden, Mag Whelan, Adrian (RAZER) Kavanagh, Tommy Prendergast and Paul O’Brien.

Our saviour came in the guise of Kilkenny LEADER Partnership where we secured the funding to renovate the hall as we see it today. In Graignamanagh, we are eternally grateful to KLP for all their assistance and support around that time. There was also significant fundraising and contributions from residents within the community and it was incumbent upon us to ensure that the community was kept appraised throughout each stage of development so that everyone knew where their money was going. Indeed, Fr Byrne was instrumental in this regard. There were many occasions in which we found ourselves strapped for funds and we could always rely on a church-gate collection, as it was our emergency funding, so I want to personally thank him for his support over the last number of years.

I was delighted to officially open our new hall and youth cafe and I look forward to seeing it back in use by our community
