BODY/ATHLETICISM:
Stocky strong guard, great ball speed. Pushes ball in transition as well as any guard in the country. Gets to the rim with a burst. Can get from outlet to rim in 4 bounces, regularly scores in less than 5 seconds of shot clock. Good lateral feet. Strong shoulders, gets into bigs alleviating size advantage and takes hit.
SHOOTING:
Not his strength. Decent technique. Range has improved to 21’, can make an open college 3 if set but is not a catch & shoot guy nor will he shoot beyond 18 off pick/rolls. Solid FT shooter including late in games when under pressure. Shooting has improved but still needs work to be consistent and lacks any mid-range pull-up game which could effect how teams defend him in Pick/Roll situations.
POSITION OFFENSE:
Good handle, outstanding in open court, he can get from outlet spot to rim in 4-5 bounces, most of his assists come in transition rather than set offense. Good passer in transition and off penetration as he gets into the paint well. Can get into his defender or bigs helping very quickly and protects with shoulder/body well. Good off pick/roll, not great, this will improve with time as Carolina didn’t emphasize Pick/Roll much. Decent post feeder. Quiet type, not a verbal floor general. More of a driver/slasher type of scorer than shooter. Good A:TO Ratio.
DEFENSE/REBOUNDING:
Solid 1on1 ball defender, good feet, accepts challenge. Competitive guy. Not a great help defender. Occasionally runs through passing lane for steal, anticipates well. Can be posted by bigger guards although he has decent strength. Tracks down long boards for bust outs.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Good poise, competitive guy. Leads more by example rather than vocally. Has won at every level. Made a good decision to go back to college last spring. He’s best in a faster paced system, not nearly as effective in half-court set offense.
OVERALL RATING:
He declared in ’08 and withdrew name, went back to NC and won a National Championship. If Lawson shot the ball better he’d be first American PG taken. He’s still a first round pick and a quality NBA player, he’s worth guaranteed money of a 1st Round pick.
’09 NCAA Tourney Averages: 21 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals per game, 6-0 record.
