JOB TITLE:INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE AT RISK OFFICER

REPORTS TO:DIRECTOR OF COLLECTIONS & LEARNING

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE AT RISK STEERING GROUP

FUNCTIONS:To deliver England-wide support to improve the capacity, sustainability and conservation standards of preserved industrial sites with public access. To develop and maintain a national strategy to improve the sustainability and conservation standards of preserved industrial sites. To improve the capacity amongst owners and managers in securing the long-term future of these sites. To create a network of relevant stakeholders and grant providers that is sustainable beyond the life of the project.

KEY OBJECTIVES:

  • To support the long-term future of preserved industrial sites that are accessible to the public
  • Work with the Industrial Heritage at Risk Steering Group and other key partners to maintain a national strategy for the improved management of preserved publicly accessible sites and to secure endorsement from key stakeholder organisations (to be agreed with the post-holder)
  • To maintain and update the review of the core portfolio of sites (around 250) as defined to ensure the information contained is accurate and the identified risks and opportunities are current and complete
  • To assess the needs of the portfolio of sites and the current level of operational activity
  • To identify support mechanisms and sources of funding along with community groups & volunteers who could be engaged with the long-term care of the identified sites
  • To update the IHSO website to provide information and support to the identified sites, avoiding duplication of existing resources e.g. AIM, AIA, Historic England, ERIH, etc.
  • To use and update social media with news and information relating to the project

To provide advice and support to groups, volunteers and organisations that care for industrial heritage sites

  • To establish a responsive and flexible training and mentoring programme building on the support mechanisms currently in existence including those of the Ironbridge Institute and AIM, etc.
  • To create a sustainable and proactive network of stakeholders and funders
  • To support existing industrial heritage networks across England
  • To work with partners to create new industrial heritage networks across England
  • To work with the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust and the IHSO Steering Group and key partners to ensure the sustainability of the IHSO project
  • Any other duties commensurate with the post.

BUDGETS HELD:

  • Small subsistence budget; any future budgets relevant to the Project as designated by the Executive of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust and/or the Steering Group

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience
  • Experience of the management and operation of preserved industrial or similar sites including income generation
  • Experience of establishing support networks
  • Experience of developing training programmes and/or mentoring schemes
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to develop and deliver detailed work programmes
  • Demonstrable ability in problem solving
  • Knowledge of appropriate funding streams and experience relating to their practical application in a heritage context
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, communication and writing skills
  • Ability to act as an advocate for the industrial heritage sector with the general public and stakeholders
  • Full driving licence and access to a vehicle

Desirable

  • Further relevant degree e.g. MA, PhD
