SLT Meeting –September 30, 2015
Minutes
- Minutes of last meeting were reviewed then approved.
Review of Organization Sheet/Budget
- Discussion of budget amount and allocation
- The money gifted by the PTA helped hire Ms. Ventouratos
- Hiring of new science teacher cluster –Ms. Kay
- People not on budget, SPED providers –Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy –City pays for
Bylaws
- Addition to SLT –Assistant Principal Leigh DiScala, and parent
- Review of Bylaws
- Adjustment of Article 3 –Membership of 10 members to 12 so there’s a 50/50 ratio of parents and staff
- Ms. Cicio volunteered to be responsible for Renumeration
- Correction of Bylaws review approval to May 2015
NYS Test Scores Review
- District and school did better than NYC Average, based on multiple factors since PS 18 has many differences in the school (more ELLs)
- Last year’s test more full-fledged CCLS
- 5th graders vs. 3rd graders gap with CCLS –hoping for less this year
- Promotion criteria used to determine promotion -not just the test, but addition of portfolios, etc.
- Opt-outs aren’t penalized
- Gifted and Talented with an opt-out = out of the program
- ELLs tend to do better in math (with computation)
- School is working diligently to fill the gaps
- “Blessed” to have fine educators
- Classes are capped in grades 2, 4 and 5
- Ms. DiScala reviewed the grade-level scores:
- 3rd Grade
- Test was more difficult
- Had higher-than-3rd grade level passages
- ELA City: 30.2% -2015
- ELA School: 46.9% -2015, 54.3% -2014, 46.5% -2013
- Math City: 38% -2015
- Math School: 84.2% -2015, 76.6% -2014, 76% -2013
- 4th Grade
- ELA City: 31.3% -2015
- ELA School: 51.7% -2015, 52.9% -2014, 28.8% -2013
- Math City: 39% -2015
- Math School: 71.1% -2015, 61% -2014, 34% -2013
- 5th Grade
- ELA City: 29.7% -2015
- ELA School: 43.2% -2015, 28.3% -2014, 66.2% -2013
- Math City: 40.9% -2015
- Math School: 59.8% -2015, 39% -2014, 61% -2013
“Stop and Drop”
- Going well
- Many parents are helping
- Some parents were ticketed by NYPD because of parking regulations
- Goal is to focus on keep our children safe
CEP Goals
- Discussion of goals
- Had to wait until after test scores for goal editing
- Carmen Farina’s Framework for Schools and new initiatives (page 6 –can be downloaded from the NYCDOE website)
- CEP due October 30, 2015
- School will be participating in a Quality Review this school year
- Notified 2 weeks before event
- Assessed by an outside consultant from the DOE
- Narrative of last Quality Review
- Every CEP goal has to have the new framework embedded with an action plan
- SMART Goals are needed
- Needs assessment (part 1) (stood out last year)
- Progress monitoring can help adjust
- A way to hold schools accountable
- Living document, can be revised
- Whatever we add, has to be in/with an action plan
- Supportive environment needs to show
- Ms Discala invited Ms. Peritz to be part of the Character Building Team
- Ms. Zambrano volunteered to translate for parents
- Ms. Peritz volunteered to provide lessons on drug prevention
- Question posed: “Do CEP goals address RTI?” –yes in provided action plan
- Times/Dates of Meetings
- Times of SLT meetings may be an issue for some parents due to working and commute
- Consensus of times needed –looking at Chancellor’s Regulations for SLT voting rights/guidelines
- Discussion time/dates of SLT meetings consensus was not reached. Discussion will continue at next meeting.
Closing
- Next Meeting Principal Laurie Careddu will bring folders for everyone’s materials
- If changes occur, a new budget will be passed out
- SLT Training on October 6, 4:30-6:30pm
