Realising Dreams through Winner of the 2014 BASA
Excellence in Arts & Academics “Increasing Access to the Arts” Award
Dear Colleague
The Festival of Fame 9 – 13 March 2016: NSA and Joburg Theatre
The country’s leading Youth Arts Festival
We trust your 2016 has got off to a great start. May it be a good year for you and your school.
In the 15 years since its inception Festival of Fame, our annual flagship project, has grown in size and stature and is now recognised as the country’s leading Youth Arts Festival. It won the coveted 2014 BASA (Business & Arts South Africa) “Increasing Access to the Arts” Award and, in 2015, broke all previous box office records for the Festival at the Joburg Theatre, boasting a dynamic and diverse line-up of NSA productions and several multi-nominated and award-winning professional productions thanks to our partnership with ASSITEJ (International Association of Theatre for Children & Young People).
Festival of Fame 2016 is set to build on our successes and promises a programme that will inspire your learners, and enrich their knowledge of and love for the arts while also supporting much of their classroom learning with several syllabus-related productions on the line-up.
In line with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement for Creative Arts in Intermediate and Senior Phases, which expects every learner to experience live professional theatre at least once a year, we cordially request that you set aside at least a single day on your 2016 year plan to spend with us at Festival of Fame – where your learners will spend a full day immersed in all forms of the arts: dance, drama, art exhibitions and installations, and music from rock to Baroque.
Highlights of this year’s Festival include: from the NSA: Dance Spectrum(a kaleidoscope of ballet, Spanish, Contemporary & African dance), Swing that Music (a magical musical showcase), The Visit (drama by FreidrichDűrrematt) and the Tony Award-winning Broadway Musical Once on This Island, an enchanting Caribbean love story with a Calypso beat directed by Joburg Theatre’s Resident Director Timothy le Roux; and an inspiring series of professional productions:Last Cow Standing, by MenziMkhwane, Making Mandela, by JenineCollocott, Thakalane Sex and Me, by Clara Vaughn and Craig Morris and After Dark in the Groot Marico - adapted from stories by Herman Charles Bosman and directed by Tara Notcutt.
More details of the exciting programme – including production synopses and age-appropriateness - will be forwarded to you and posted on our website ( in due course. In the meantime, we urge you to confirm your attendance to ensure we will be able to accommodate your learners.
Kindly complete the section overleaf to inform us on which day you will be attending. Your early response will greatly assist us in being proactive in our planning to accommodate all our patrons.
