Seminary Hill Association, Inc.

2015 ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Review of the Past Year

Speech by President Nancy R. Jennings

November 11, 2015

Alexandria has a new Mayor-elect and new members of the School Board, and I look forward HAPPILY to working with them to improve the quality of life in the City of Alexandria.

Progress has been made on three items of concern to residents on Seminary Hill:

1.  The plan for Fort Ward Park is done and implementation of this plan has begun. Deputy City Manager Emily Baker heads this effort and will speak with us about it and other matters during the program tonight.

2.  The School Board is considering plans that will impact Seminary Hill residents. The Board of Directors plans to meet with them early next year to discuss ways to improve the quality of education in the City; especially the need for more classrooms. Plans are under consideration to expand Patrick Henry from an elementary school to pre-K through grade 8 and add a huge recreation center. We are hearing that T. C. Williams High School needs to be expanded. The feasibility of putting lights on the T. C. football stadium still looms.

3.  Last but not least, for several years, traffic issues on Quaker Lane and Seminary Road—both volume and speed—have been a concern. This past year, the City collected some data for us and options have been studied. Under “New Business” tonight, Jim Durham will speak about plans to make these streets safer.

Let me remind you again that:

·  Information on all of these issues is posted on the Seminary Hill website

·  You are invited to subscribe to the Seminary Hill e-news

·  You are always welcome to attend the monthly Board of Directors’ meetings, and to become involved in a civic issue that interests you.
